Evinrude E Tech motors
« on: October 03, 2013, 11:46:06 AM »
We are looking for a new boat. There are a lot of boats fitted with Evinrude E Tec motors, is there a problem with them?
when I die, may my wife not sell my fishing tackle for what I told her I paid for it... and I have bought more, a severe case of TA

we had the 90's on our old boat but only put about 120 hours on them  its not alot of hours so cannot comment to much, they gave us good service no complaints and there service intervals are ever 300hours

Nothing wrong with them. Heard services and spares more expensive but then much longer service intervals. What's cheap these days, cant be more expensive than Yamaha.

when the motors are installed the oil injection can be set to HD100 or tcw3 or normall 2 stroke. have mine set to tcw3 standard but run hd100 so they are getting well oiled. i have the racor traps on my false transom so a line from my pick up to trap then out to motor

plus you must have the right amperage battery my 115 have to use a 120amp battery

From what I know, they are really good motors and the technology is not 'new', so they have had time to fix any inherent issues that may have arisen. If my Mercury was not such an outstanding motor, I would buy the ETec. (I would do some research on the exact motors that you are looking at and check for any common faults and costs to rectify.)

I have heard quite a bit of 'pub talk' about problems with them and firsthand know of a blue pair of 50's on a Yogi Cat that gave a lot of trouble, that said a mate of mine had a 115 on his Swift that was flawless.

a mate of mine runs 2 x 90's on his 501 Ace cat which is a heavy boat, and he loves them, says they put the 2 x 85 yammies he had on to bed... and the fuel economy is obviously better with the 90 evinrudes

Quite a few stories of ECU's going which is over R10k to replace I believe. They seem to be hit & miss.

BRP Bombardier recreational products  ie seadoo can am evinrude gautrain learjets   e tec motors are the most advanced and technically superior outboards ever made that money can buy to this day each and every ecu replaced under warranty was caused by loose or bad intermittend battery connections, not a product manufacturing fault,so dont swop your battery leads around or jump start, they require good solid voltage for the ecu ,clean fuel and tcw3 oil, propping is vitally important as they dont like labouring, always prop to max revs, show me a 115hp 4 stroke that burns 27liters an hour at 5700 rpm            :win:

Done just on 250 hours with my 2 x 50HP etecs. Only hassle was a dodgy trim pump when they were new, but that was replaced quickly under warranty. Since then not a single issue. Jump starting is not a problem as long as you do it properly. Done it a few times when one of my batteries died on me, no issues. Spares can be ordered from the states at about 70% of the cost of buying them here in SA (even with shipping costs and a crappy Rand exchange rate). Service is good from the American boat shops etc and the parts are at your door within 10 days. I have bought spare anodes, water pumps, fuel filters etc from Crowley marine in the USA without issues. They even have the complete schematics on the web site, so you can ID your parts precisley.
