as i understand, pulling the tag (once the desired loop has been made) locks down the knot, so it should not slip down and tighten (theoretically speaking...)

This method is fine to use, when you pull the tag end, the knot does tighten onto the line, leaving the desired size loop,
BUT it will never stay, the minute you have pressure from a fish that knot will with out a doubt slide and tighten all the way down to the Jig head / Lure

The knot works fine, but the only down side, is that after each fish, you have to retie the knot as it would have tightened up against the lure / jig head, and you won't have that natural presentation anymore

Rapala stays the most used and most practical for lures to keep the most natural presentation possible

I think it will work better on the thicker line diametre Steve, the line will probably bite into itself better
But for the lighter drop shot, especially when using flouro carbon, i have pulled the tag end tight with pliers even, and when pulling on the main line the knot slides down and tightens up

I have not used it on larger line diametres, but i would think that it would work better with thicker line diamtres, have not tried it
Smaller line diamtres for drop shot though, does not work for me

I'm sure a rapala knot is not going to work for 80kg tuna, but rather for light tackle fishing with lures

Nonsense, I ahve had big Tuna, Sailfish and HUGE sharks of 300+Kg and these knots have not slipped down when tied properly and I have been using them for years

You are tying it wrong, the trick is to pull the line and the tag end with even pressure, you will see that it warps perfectly with the 1st warp (Hook side) going smaller

I doubt I am tieing it wrong, a figure of eight is not rocket science, i do pull down evenly, and only once the loop is set where i want it do i pull tight on the tag end to lock in place, my experience on lighter line for light drop shot be it flourocarbon or normal mono, is that the knot slides down, this was my experience and why i prefer to use the rapala

I have never used it for any heavier application like the fishing you guys do so i cannot comment there

I will go and try it again tonight and see if i can actually get that knot to set on the lighter stuff

So i tried numerous times last night with different line diametres from .40 upto .80 to get that figure eight to tighten up firmly by pulling slowly and evenly, i pulled that knot to the point where i thought it would snap for sure if pulled any tighter, when pulling the main line with some pressure, the knot first gets stuck but then slides down to the swivel I was using

Perhaps you can show me at a future social, i believe you that it sets, i just can't get it right myself, but also can't see that i am doing something wrong

Hey Louis,
What i do is tie my leader to a small power swivel and attach a split ring to it.
This allows the lure to have the same or similar action as a rapala knot. Just carry a split ring plier, and bobs your uncle !
