John F’s DIY: Bottom fish release rig
« on: March 13, 2013, 07:51:00 PM »
After the discussion on the release of red steenbras (http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/index.php?topic=12175.msg209392#msg209392), I realized that I do love to fish for bottoms and a few areas we visit (e.g. Baixo Danae) has a large population of potato bass - I have caught a potato bass there once with a deep diving lure!

So, I decided to make a bottom fish release rig based on the design that was published in the Jan/Feb issue of Ski-Boat magazine by Bruce Mann and Stuart Dunlop.

This took me about 30 min to make and went straight to the boat.

What I started with:
[smg id=1212]

Then, I filed the barb off to make the release smoother...
[smg id=1213]

After that I wrapped the hook and s/s rod with electrical tape and then with old 30 Lb nylon. BTW, that's a 300 gr sinker.
[smg id=1214]

Took some more s/s wire and made a wide and round clip, so it will accommodate several sinkers if needed (depending on the size of the fish).
[smg id=1215]

Tied a cork to the rig to make it safer when not in use.
[smg id=1216]

Sinkers attached, it's ready to use.

That's a great piece of handiwork. Release of cave dwellers is the reason I do very little jigging. I've seen far too many bass and others not make it back down. It always breaks my heart to see them floating listlessly on the surface. Good one bro. :win:
Forgive me Father for I have spinned... It's been three weeks since my last cob session.
