Title: VAAL TRIP 4. 22nd January.
Post by: Herman Jooste on January 10, 2012, 08:25:35 PM
Having noticed that there are quite a few members wishing to throw a fly at yellows I think it's time for another Vaal "social".

This trippie will be exclusive to UA members only. Anyone and everyone on this site is welcome. A special exclusive invite to Walkerskiller and Mrs Simpson.

As stated in the heading it will be on the 22nd of January. The venue will be decided about 3  days beforehand, due to the flows being very up and down with the current rain. :dunno:

Venues that spring to mind are : Eendekuil, Strome, Eastco, Oord Nebo, Strydoms.

Depending on numbers I fancy Eendekuil, easy wading and good fishing.

Remember though we have to book beforehand.

I have Tim's number, so if it's the venue I will post it.

So who's in ??????

Already made plans on Monday  duh duh I will have to take ANOTHER raincheck  :-( so sorry... Won't quite be the same as I will be throwing  :mili: for smallmouths with 10lb line  :hehe: :hehe:

I'd love to join you as well if I may! (Alet - newbie to the forum). I know Eendekuil back to front. Would be very happy to explore different waters, but at least at Eendkuil I might be able to show off a bit!

I'm not counting on it being low enough to fish. Will watch closely though. I normally wait until the last minute (Saturday night / Sunday morning) before making any plans.

Hmmm... turns out my hubby doesn't want to go through again this Sunday. Apparently we're putting too many miles on his car - driving to the Vaal every weekend for the past 5 weeks! :-(    Guess I'm just a wee bit more into fishing than he is!

Secondly - will the forum create a fund for my divorce proceedings? No way my dear, wonderful hubby would let me go fishing with one of the Joburg guys. Oh, unless you meant BOTH of us should catch a lift...

O.K. The venue will be Woelwaters, which is just downstream of Arends Nes, flows permitting.
Entrance fee is R30 pp, and the wading is relatively easy. :-)

This will be confirmed on Friday afternoon, depending on rain.

I will in the interim draw a map of how to get there, as nobody bar 1 that I know has ever fished there before. :shk

It will be great ( methinks ) all of us fishing a new venue. w;k

So today we had Vaal trip 4.

It was p!ssing down when I left Vanderbijl, and was rather nervous about the day's fishing.  Michael SMS'd to say he was bailing out 'cos ofthe rain in Vdb.

Crossed the N1 and HEY no more rain :-)

Got to the venue ( Woelwaters ) and was IMMEDIATELY  IMPRESSED. (clap)

Neat and tidy, organised,  lady there to open up at 05:45. (clap)

There's a PUB  :happ:  at the office ( which, yes I did visit on the way home. )

For R 30.00 a day p/p it's great. Their Chalets look good, as does the general  area for day visitors. There is a swimming pool, as well as a putt putt course and I don't know what else for the kids, just drove past them on the way to the waters.

Anyway, back to the fishing.  :fshn:

As per normal Rory was first into a fsh, soon followed by Nico ( Monster ).

Then came the "moment" or should I say "movement" of the day when "Homes" had his first ever Vaal Shuffle.  :shk   All we saw after the splash was his hat, luckily still on his head. :hehe:

All in all it was not a bad day's fishing for a new venue for all of us.

Home's had 2 yellows on,
Rory about 5,
Nico ( Monster ) caught and landed a HUGE muddie, as well as
some SM.

After battling across the main flow and fishingup against the reeds and rocks on the opposite bank, all I had was 5 sm on/off.  :unhap

Tucking rod under arm I decided to walk back to Rory and Homy who were a fair downsteam of me. So I wobbled through the water, tripping here and there, and found a patch to fish. Second cast and I was VAS.

Within 15 seconds I had the fish by me feet, Muddie, I thought.  :hehe:

How wrong I was, :dunno: , the fish just took off, but slowly, downstream. I managed  to stop and turn the fish and regain some line. After 5 minutes ( which is a long time to net a fish on the Vaal )    Rory  starts chirping me about using a 3 # , and how about landing thefish.

To cut a long story short, I DID land it.

My PB Barbel on fly.  5.75 Kg, on a 5# Slap Scott. :rck"

Some pics to follow,

PROOF, that Homie  was f/f for yellows.

Thank you gents, it was an awesome day. The trip there was short with good company, the venue perfect, the beers cold and the fishing was prime.

I also managed to go for a quick dip( Twice) so homie shouldn't feed bad. There is only two tipes of people fising the vaal those who have done the shuffle and those who still needd to. Homie decided to get it over and done with and he can now scratch it off his Bucket list.

Still an awesome barbel Herman well done.
