Title: Urgent help on my bucket list for 2012
Post by: wernerm on January 01, 2012, 02:09:14 PM
Hey guys,

I am on an absolute mission to catch a Golden trout this year. I caught one fifteen years ago in the Cape and fellow anglers think I am talking rubbish. I have to prove that they do exist in SA. I attach a picture from Tom Sutcliffe's site. I'm not talking about the white albino rainbow mind you.

If anyone's been to a venue or river that have these please let me know.

Hi Wernerm - thank you for the info - I would think you are right in what we have are albino, although the breeder in Machadorp assured me by email they were not albino, but golden, so  :dunno: . I will ask my clients if anyone has any in their dams.

Thanks krissi, you're a star.   :tkx:

You can assure your breeder that none of the five golden trout sub species are even close to white, in fact, they get darker and the red bands on the sides dissappear with age making them look almost like browns.

The one I'm looking for specifically is also known as the California Golden trout. It is in fact gold in colour, only grows to about 15cm and have the vivid red bands on the sides.

So, I've done some extensive research and indeed it seems that this species are not to be found in this country. According to Government Gazette also illegal to import as far as I can tell.

So that got me onto another mission starting with said species. (Costing and itinerary done for the trip to "The golden triangle" in California)

I am now writing a small thesis (54 pages so far) on all the trout species and sub species in the world and where they can be found, photo's of each the whole shebang.

Topic has been discussed in a family meeting and approved. We will  be traveling to these locations over the next 5 years (or more) trying to get all (except those marked endangered or extinct) trout species on fly. This will probably turn into a book as well with all photo's replaced on the thesis with my own.

The California trip which looks like it will be first, scheduled for end 2012, will take 18 species off the list of 81 trout species.

At that rate we will do it in five years but alas we might have to go twice to some locations.
