Daiwa Saltiga 50 Hyper HKP Service
Below is a Photographic Service Manual on how to comprehensively Service a Daiwa Saltiga Hyper HKP.
The reel is very similar to other Daiwa multipliers and can be used as a basic guide for most of the Saltiga's and Saltist's, except for the Drag system.
NB: The DRAG SYSTEM OF THIS REEL IS VERY DIFFERENT TO ALL OTHER SALTIGA'S.
IMAGES NOW UPDATED TO INCLUDE ALL SALTIGA'S.
The inside of the SALTIGA SA series and the HYPER series are identical except for the Drag's which are different.
Enjoy!

NB: This where the HYPER differs from all the other reels...
The first washer that fits into the Drive Gear is the Eared metal washer. ie: the metal washer with ears, fits directly onto the metal. So we have essentially the first washer, being metal, fixed to the drive gear and fitting directly onto metal.
If you use any other washer other than the eared washer, you will damage your drive gear. The metal washer must be locked (with the ears) to the drive gear, failing which it will turn, metal against metal causing bad damage and ultimately Drag failure.

Skills? Nawt bru, no skill in doing this... just hard work!
How long....
350 photgraphs... sift through them, discard the ones out of focus, poor lighting etc... then start with the remaining 120 photos... Resize each one, crop, edit and put in script, along with text and part number... from there, it's upload each photo in sequence...
A tut like this probably take about 15-16 hrs of solid graft, maybe a week or 2 to put together... some okes are

-
definate skills my man....we all know dentists are not the sharpest people around :crzy .
dont ever think your hard work goes unnoticed. 100s of guys including myself sit with our reels infront of the pc tryna service it ...well thats until u get the hang of it lol.
:tkx: .....you not too bad for an internet keyboard rambo angler :shre:
-
You know this is why I have so much respect for Reefz and all the guys who put up tuts. I started putting together a tut for single splice wind ons and somehow everything else gets in the way of it. To prioritize making tuts for others ahead of your own commitments shows true selflessness!

Hi Reefman
I have a saltiga 50 hkp that was serviced in dec 2014 and I'm not satisfied with the results can you maybe have a look at it sometime I will bring it to you. please phone me with your details I'm staying in secunda 08two33833seven8
Thanks
Marius

Sorry bru, I'm not in the business of Reel Services...
Best guy for the job is Enigma - Craig Neil of CDS Angling supplies. Think he's in Pretoria. Amgine on Ultimate.

Sorry bru, I'm not in the business of Reel Services...
:rotfl :hyst:
-
So it was brought to my attention that some okes have used this Tut to service their ordinary Saltiga's. Problem is that the Drag system of the Hyper is very different to the ordinary Saltiga's. So I've updated this tut with new Graphics to include both the Hyper and ordinary Saltiga Drag services. The rest of the reel is identical.
-
I can vouch for Craig, he has serviced both my saltigas, and it runs like x wife, not so smooth, but shes still running; ) :yipee:
-
This is one of the best pictorial tuts that ive seen on all of the fishing forums that i follow.
You've really put a lot of effort into it to make things very simple for us.
Thank you very much Reefs

Hi Reefman
There is actually 3 types of saltiga available in SA
1) SA50HKP Hyper
2)SA50HKP
3) SA50
Nr 1 and 2 is almost the same reel drag identical but Nr 2 is the ordinary one with the drag that is different
look at the attachment
Thanks
Marius

Actually 5 types if you count:
4) 50 Lever drag high-speed
5) 50 Lever drag 2-speed

Don't understand what you're saying here Marius... 1 and 2 drag identical, but then 2 has drag that is different??
-
sorry nr 3 is the reel that has the different drag system

i know this is an ancient thread, so hopefully people out there will remember these original Saltigas. I have the original Blue spool Saltiga 50 HK (great reel)
When i spin in free spool i have always had this shuck shuck shuck sound. Have always wondered what it is. It seems to free spool just fine.
The bearings are all fine.
is it the pinion gear that gets lifted up and spins on spool shaft that makes that noise. Because when the pinion is lifted to disengage from the main gear it is just sliding on the spool shaft?
On another note, i always see hybrid ceramic bearing 'kits' for the spools for this reel but they always have two bearings. there are three bearings supporting the spool, the two main ones (#3 and #10) and the one under the drag control cap (#44). The drag control cap works by pressing against the end of the spool shaft the bearing has nothing to do with the drag control, is just to support end of spool shaft. but why replace the two big bearings with high speed ceramic and leave that one ?
Any idea what has improved on the later Saltiga series, apart from the funky star drag design ?
On my original one i have a rubber water seal (#4) over the bearing on the right side (can see when remove spool, it covers the bearing) but i would think that seal would touch the spool and slow it down. it doesnt appear to have the same one on the tutorial above.?

The spools on the "blue spool" reels were always an issue. They were so problematic that our local distributor, The Kingfisher, used to keep spare spools on hand for those breakages. You probably have a warped spool.
The new Saltiga is a chalk and cheese comparison. It is an engineering marvel. It's better than the old Satiga in every single respect imaginable. In fact its so good that the old Saltiga doesn't deserve the Saltiga name w;k
-
hi Kes. thanks for the info. spool is fine. this is a reel that has only been used to cast once (and caught nothing) then packed away. i checked it just to be sure.
The new Saltigas use Magseals dont they ?. if so ,that rules them out for me.
on another note mine uses the 7 washer drag system, the drag washers look smooth almost like plastic, ( i know is carbon, but i cant see any weave in them).
i have cleaned them with a paper towel, should i re grease them ? (Cals grease). the drag does not seem very high on these reels.
is it worth changing the drag washers to Smooth Drag carbontex . like i say these have never been used, i have cleaned them b/c the grease in the reel had gone a bit hard/sticky sitting for so many years. But inside the reel is like brand new.
Is it possible to modify the drag t the ATD system
