Post by: Lichia amia on September 21, 2011, 12:24:55 PM

One of the facets of our beloved sport that has really grabbed me over the last year is Fly fishing. So would like to toss a couple of flies around at the up coming Vidal bash. Targeting mainly Wave Garrick and Bonefish to use as slide bait for a   :shrk: or  :gt:

Now please assist with the following :

Rod weight
Fly line ( floating , intermediate or sinking )
Recommended Flies
Area to focus on

Looking forward to your replies

Nothing less than a 9 weight Craig, and either intermediate or sinking line will suffice... Saltwater fish fight crazy on the fly gear its awesome, taking my fly gear too!

Best flies:

Crazy Charlie
Salty Bugger
Poppers
Prawn immitations

Heard of Rory’s flies - The Arthur’s on the rocks imitation , John Jameson surf bugger , Captains Coker , Windhoek drifter . Believe they all work rather well

Gareth !!! ... Craig is in the A-team or have you forgotten ...  :unhap <: :unhap

If you're going to give the A-team advice at least make sure you're misleading them and not helping them ...  :hnthnt: :hnthnt: :hnthnt:

Gareths correct, an 8 weight is about as light as you want to go. Something to remember is the wind is going to drive you crazy - you must have a stripping basket to control your flyline or you'll spend the whole day fighting with "knitting". Alternatively flylines and sea rocks are not good friends. Fishing the rocks and surf you'll need a sinking or fast intermediate to break through the surface or you won't end up fishing where you've cast to!

Flies will depend on what you aiming on catching, cant go wrong with some basic flies:
Crazy charlies
Clouser minnows
Salty buggers

Areas to fish will depend on the target species eg: you'll catch pompano in the working white water right up to your ankles! Look for channels and gutters in the surf and fish them. Off the rocks look for foam lines and fish them.
