Title: Casting with a grinder
Post by: DONSA on September 15, 2011, 04:10:50 PM
Hi guys/gals,

I just ordered my P6 and Ultegra 14000 Ci4 from Gremlins.I am so excited that I am actually getting goosebumps :yipee:

The question that I have may stem from a little paranoia...but heck here goes anyway:
Is there a preferred casting technique for the grinder set up?

I am just a little concened about altering my technique.(old dogs and new tricks if you get my drift) :dunno:

What is the opinion out there?

Dont take advice from Half Pint on this Donsa he overwinds grinders regularly...  :hehe:

I recon there are 2 options and both should be tested... Try out a new technique first with the bionic finger or whatever it is called, use a method you feel comfortable casting with that. Then revery back to your old method and see what your distance and comfort is like... Enjoy the set up  :envy

No prob, look im no expert, struggle to cast my grinder 100 meters  :hehe: I am not going to lie, but i think trial an error is a must and who knows maybe you will find something you can use from different techniques and put them all into one  :-)

As a specialist grinder overwinder here on UA I will give you the reverse of what I do. With the new grinder rods you can't place the reel up the blank because it gets very hard to put in a bucket and fight the fish with the reel at about chest height. All the rods are built with the reel at the bottom the same as for a multiplier. You will also need the bionic finger because whacking a cast with a 6oz and bait will hurt your finger. Just tighten your drag up and practice a bit at a quiet spot because the feeling is very different to a normal rig

Thanks for the advice Half Pint.Yup I get what you mean about the reel being up the blank. The P6 that has been ordered will come with bionic finger and reel seat lower on the blank. :corrct:

Where are the guys that are achieving 150m on this set up?It would be interesting to hear the changes that they had to make(if any) to their techniques to achieve these sort of distances :rck"

Throw just like your standard setup and the distance will come. The reason for such massive distance lies not in the action but rather in the make up of the set. Beginning with the rod you have an extremely long rod which allows for a massive arc, you then have a very soft tip which stores a massive amount of potential energy which when you "hit it" at the end of the cast really flicks the sinker out. The eyes on the rod are giant which means less resistance.

Moving onto the reel the long cast spool allows line to peel off with less resistance than standard grinders (check out angler1s problems with his saragosa) and way less resistance than any multiplier on the market.

Moving onto the braid check out the thickness of your 50lb braid compared to any of your lines. The single biggest cause of drag in any cast is your line, just ask anyone who has ever snapped off mid cast. Most guys are also only fishing a 1.5 to 2m leader which also increases distance. Oh and I have been successfully hitting the 140m mark which considering I'm only 1.65m tall would I reckon equate to 160ish for someone a bit taller

Sorry for the hijack!!!

Can you use any rod to cast a grinder or do you guys have rods specifically made to be fished with a grinder? I have quite a few old rods and would like to set one of them up with a grinder, just not sure if a rod that was built for a  :mp:  can be used to work with a  :cg:  ??

It will have to be redone. The eyes are on the wrong side of the blank generally they also turn the legs of the first 2 eyes around

also the grinder set up has a longer butt than the multipliers from what i know. i just purchased the loomis 12ft carbon spinning rod 3oz, putting my penn slammer on it. cant wait to try it out. rod is coming in today  :yipee:

Deez the new grinder blanks are all built with the reel low down like with a multiplier. This allows you to comfortably fight a fish. To cast you use your left hand on the reel

What line are you going to put on the reel?

If its braid you can look at a glove like a what the mountain bike riders use as braid will cut in to your finger quickly.

Have fun...

The bionic finger takes care of that

DIFFICULT COMPO MAN!!  i tell you , water looked awesome colour at most places around the mountain, silversands produce almost nada! fish came out at Verwoeds , but no cows only spotties and smoothies , dont think more than 50 fish for the day , so thats hard angling, the dropping baro was ideal but eish fish was scarce , this inter mediate seaon in Cape Town is temperamental , the water is ice cold but the sun is shining the wind is right , so it can only mean post hibernation syndrom, the reefs were quite aswell so u can imagine, but the season might just turn out for the better as the temp increases and the southerly winds start to blow , bronzies have made their early appearances so this is a good indication the kob are closer and very soon we shall have screaming reels !! just not this week end , but alas im very happy with my new P6 T flex the reel is not so much of an issue but i will get a C i4 by the next month !

And it brakes with the 10th cast of the morning as I have seen it happen... ???

Ok that would be different. I'm not sure how much a glove would help with a 6oz and bait attached. I'd be very scared to test! Btw how did it break

I used to cast a lot of spoons and plugs in Angola and the Durbs and surrounds.

I always used a glove.

Not my bionic finger that broke but seen a few in bits...

Guess the pressure is just to much after some time.

Personally would not use such a heavy rig with a grinder.

For me a grinder setup 4 oz is about max

Gerhad,

Rock and Surf is currently going through the "Grinder Revolution"
Many great (read huge) fish have been tamed with the grinder, paired with purpose built rods. Its not the same as used for lures etc.

6 ounces plus are cast, and NO glove's gonna help !

The bionic finger is built into the rod, and I cant see it breaking easily  :dunno:

Boet clearly you have been away from the circles , these bionic fingers have been used to throw some big baits , for raggies ect , and this is the first one i heard of breaking, its construction seems quite bullet proof, i myself have used them on a heavy tirelago casting a 8 oz sinker with bait , and i swear i have thrown more than ten times already , maybe u had a defective product , i mean this does happen from time to time when something escapes quality control , but i can assure you it works  , i have tried the glove thing but the amount of confidence that bionic finger gives you , its amazing , im pro bionic finger and im enjoying every moment!
