Title: Hooks for lures
Post by: Half-Pint on August 15, 2011, 11:24:13 AM
Hey guys I really hate trebles with a passion so on all my new lures I will be changing to singles. My problem is that most of the eyes on hooks are too small for split rings. Are there any brands that have bigger eyes

Eagle Claws have large eyes Brad but I dont trust the quality have had a few rust on me after using them once  :dunno: look at some assist hooks instead or maybe try find some Mustads with bigger eyes...

Try Livebait hooks.

Alternatively, make wire rings with piano wire, or use dacron... similar to a jig

I have the same problem. One solution is to fix the hooks to the lure using wire. Fritz has a tut on the forum about that. I also used Daihittchi (SPELLING!!!) - the short shank (live bait) hooks, but their shanks are rather thick making it difficult to get the eye into the split ring without bending the splitring.

I thought about using the wire rings but I find it a mission to make them that small. Ill have to look out in the shop to see what there is. I have heard guys mention the gamaktsu soi ring hooks anyone used these?

Wazzat?
For smaller lures I use oval split rings. They work well but I'm not so sure about strentgh when a big fish should take it.

VMC salmon siwash is the one you're after

Morning All                                                                                             I am also trying to replace all my trebles with singles, but am having a problem with getting the bottem hook to sit straight. What is the easiest way to keep the hook point facing in the right direction, the only thing I can think of is either opening the hook eye and leaving out the split ring, (but think this might weaken the hook eye), or putting in an extra split ring, (just doesn't look right, hook flaps around all over the place)                                      Thanks

If you are going to open the hook eye try and anneal (soften) the metal first by making it red hot and let it cool down slowly in the air - otherwise the hook may snap off. Open the hook eye just enough to slip over the ring and bend closed again.
Due to the tight radius of the hook eye, it will still require a massive force to bend it open. (Ie. it should still be strong enough)
Test the strength afterwards.
The only problem is that the rust protection will be destroyed if the hook is heated.

Personally I would just use double split rings like we do for poppers

I also use double split rings on nylon plugs as suggested by Barry Wareham.

Hi Guys

I am so glad I found this thread. After my day at sea, I decided to get stuck in to the boat lures - they were a mess! Every single one has trebles, and I am on a mission to change them to singles, after seeing how Strandloper and FA battled with the garfish. My question is what size hook to put on the lure? We have from dinky little ones to huge poppers. Do I match the treble size? Some have 3 trebles - do I put 3 singles on these?

The next question - we inherited a lot of konas, feathers and plastic skirty type lures from my folks, from their days of competitive ski-boating. Each one has a stainless steel (what looks like) 10/0 hook - the konas (I think they are kona's) have much bigger, in fact HUGE, hooks on. Are these not too big? If so, what size should I change them to?

Photos - about 1/3 of the rapalas, poppers etc that I need to sort and change, and a day's work untangling and packeting feathers, etc

Hi Krissi, for the lipped Rapala's and Halco's you should leave the trebles, on the poppers you can put singles.
10/0 hooks on the Kona's is perfect.
If you need help, shout.

Krissi I don't know much about Konas but the rapalas for general fishing those hooks will be fine provided you understand some fish will be coming back to the pot as the tend to tear the fishes mouth quite a lot. I have had fish that were successfully released with trebles.
Those poppers look like halcos? What size are they? Generally they are used on extremely hard fighting species such as GTs so the hooks imo must be upgraded. On mine I have 2 heavy duty 220lb owner split rings and 2 single VMC 9/0 jigging hooks like Fritz posted. Check out Jigstar Africa they had some awesome split rings on there. I think 200+lb rings for R80 and its a pack of 10. The Owner rings were about R40 for 4

I certainly hope so Mike... makes them more attractive. At R80 a pop I'd rather use an extra split ring!

This is something that for awhile now has confused me. Why is there such a huge variation in small lures? From the no name jobs at R30 to halcos at R100ish to rapalas at R150 to these at R200 to R300? What's the difference

There is a huge difference, the nnb ones usuall cannot swim right to start with, then you must look at how they are made, those pricey ones come from Japan, have laser cut plate through them to keep big fish hooked up, have the kinetc cast system inside for longer casts, each lure has a specific way in which it swims and there is more. You get what you pay for and thise are the best your money can buy. You pay peanuts......, you know the story. Thise lure catch fish and are designed for fishing in high pressure areas where the tiny details matter.

Tokoloshie, look at the Onda Ondas... They were popular because they produced fish due to their in built swimming ability, now many guys have tried to duplicate them and non of these duplicates work or prpoduce fish properly. Why... becasue the critical design elements have been left out, the weigh distribution way out and the lures also do not have the in built balance, never mind the fact that they do not swim properly. Yes they are half the price, but are actually worthless.

Good question.
I think the following may have and influence on the price:

1. Name
2. Cost of research and development. I bought cheap lures that swim on their sides.
3. Durability
4. Quality of hooks.
5. Swimming action. Some manufacturers have glass tanks to observe and test swimming action of proto types.
6. Probably also hook-up rate as reported by (paid?) anglers.

A certain make of lure, at about R40 each, were preferred by a well known kayak angler on the South Coast at one stage due to much higher success rate over much more expensive brands. Even if the lip on the lure was metal.

I suppose its a bit of a luck case then. I recently bought a couple of R30 lures and all but one swam well. I guess that could change with one bump

The colour of the lure is also important:
I fished in the Sedgefield lagoon once, trolling lures off the kayak. Nothing.
I then went to a tackle shop in Knysna and asked them advice. They sold me and orange belly lure with a blue back, (R120.00 !!) because "that is what works this season for cob". On the first try in the Sedgefield lagoon, I had my first cob.

I use Mustad Hoodlum hoos on my lures and gently open them with a side cutter, and then some gentle persuading with a flat screw driver if necesary. When the hook is mounted at the rear of the lure, this ensures the the hook is always facing up (as opposed to sideways if you use a single split ring), which tends to help if you are fishing in rocky areas. (your lure just skims over the rocks)

I have broken 1 or 2 hooks while trying to open them, but that was because I was rushing it.

I have not had a problem with the hooks rusting (yet)
