So 1 of my 2 aims this winter is to target Garrick/Leervis from the boat. I picked up the basics from a few shows on TV but would really appreciate your inputs.
As I have it
Step 1
Collect bait either shad or preferably mullet ( how & where would one get mullet off Durban?)
Step 2
Find suitable water to target :grk: ( what must we look for rips, white water working?)
Step 3
Go in as close & safely possible to the breakers drop your pinned livie on 1 single through the top jaw on flouro carbon, free spool & move out of surf zone to safety
Step 4
Do you tighten the drag very lightly or keep it on free spool
Your inputs and corrections would be greatly appreciated

Hi Prego
I have the same aim for this winter. I've missed out last winter on some nice garrick been caught from the side at Uvongo at Orange rocks. The guys have used shad as livies from the rocks with a slide trace into the water. It is so much easier from the boat. I know Bwana has caught a couple from the boat at PortShepstone river mouth. He uses shad as livebait with a circle hook and 50 lb fluoroleader.
We had a chat about targeting garrick this July (16-23) and will be launching from Shelly. We will have the at least three easy spot to go and target garrick within 7 kilorange from the launch. Your method of targeting garrick sounds perfect.
Lets get them

I would say live shad is a better choice than mullet. With shad the smaller the better in fact what often happens is the 30cm shad you put out loses some weight from all that swimming these tend to get picked up sooner

Hi Guys,
I've targeted Garrick with big success of Durban.
Let me tell you how I do it, and others can give input:
PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT MY WAY OF CATCHING GARRICK IS DANGEROUS AND ONLY TO BE ATTEMPTED BY WAKKER SKIPPERS. SKIPPERS DO NOT FISH.PERIOD
ok, with that out of the way.
I've found that both shad and mackerel work well for garrick and both are easy to get off Durbs. You can get Mackerel from the normal bait spots, and shad anywhere at the nets opposite the main beach piers:
Tackle: I use my normal couta rods and reels;
I use a single circle hook tied on 40lb fluorocarbon
Area: Blue lagoon, hypermarket or any other river mouth area:
Tactic: I drive behind the back-line and look for sandbank that are about 40m from shore.
If I get a sand bank with a nice deep gully next to it, I will rig 2 rods with baits. 1 rod per crew member.
I wait for my chance in the breakers and when safe I run in to the sandbank, my crew drop-cast their baits on the bank I get us out of there to just
behind the back-line, safe. There I sit and wait boat just idling, point towards the sea.
The bite: ok,firstly both rods are completely free spool all the time, not even a ratchet, garrick will feel it.crew member thumb lightly on spool.
When a crew member senses a pickup, we let the fish run...it will stop running after 20s or so, scaling the bait. It will then come back and eat it. Midway through the second run I gradually turn up the drag and let the circle do it's job. Fish on !!
I repeat this throughout the day. My most fish in a day off hypermarket area with this tactic was 43 garrick, largest 17kg.
Some okes slow troll behind the back-line with bait, and although this will get the odd fish, it is not nearly as productive as working the sand banks close in.
Garrick poppers also works, but not nearly as good as bait. But on days where the surf is big this might be your only way of getting onto the sandbank with big casts.
Let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks Jaen, very informative and just the sought of post I was looking for. What size circles do you use?
PS. Wakky skipper is right  :lolo:
Keep them coming gents.

:grk: are fantastic fish to catch, the fight puts a couta to shame, they never give up. Jean is 100% correct. I use 2/0 mustard hoodlems back to back and pin through the top lip. I do as Jean suggests but if i get no pulls after 10 - 15min I troll slowly on one motor just in gear (other idling in neutral ready for the great escape) till I reach another likely spot and go in drop the baits. I have also found keep rotating the live baits with fresh ones, the others put back in the live well to catch their breath back.
Please be very carefull when targeting garrick, it is dangerous. If there are a few boats be carefull not to be trapped on the inside as it could end up nasty if a set comes through. If you do get trapped, head for the shore and wait in the trough always moving away from your lines, when the sea settles go out again. Very exciting type of fishing. I tell my crew if i yell HOLD TIGHT dont ask questions just do it. Good luck, see you on the water this winter. My lucky month for them is September. :fshn:

Thanks for sharing CLS, can you explain to hooks back to back I am little confused by that :dunno:

mmhh, circles are very different in size depending on manufacturer. Bottom line is small, but gape big enough with about 1.5cm clearance.

chained. If you do not use a live bait crimp like I do, or a bridle rig, you can chain your hooks onto each other
-
Hi Prego. I take the 2 hooks, put them back to back, line up the eyes and bind them together (on the shank 5mm) with double ghost cotton then put on some superglue,(can colour the cotton with a black marker) this is to hold then tight so as not to twist. The one goes through the lip and the other stands proud above. I only use 2/0 as the garrick are very shy and will feel the hook.
-
I have read about another tactic where the guys idle just behind the back line with their livies in the water. They then cast plugs toward the surf and the Garrick will follow it out and then take the live bait. It might be a less risky option but you still need an awake skipper.

Yip that's how the ESA boys did it on the tele........ :tkx:

Don't over complicate it.
Use either a single circle or live bait hook about 6/0. Pin through the nostrils or the circle through the top lip. Clip a small piece of the top of the tail off. Mackerel will outfish any bait!!! Go as close to backline as your balls allow and pitch your bait. Move out and start throwing plugs. A small sinker will also help! A mackerel will swim out to sea faster than you can move your boat out if you don't weight it or cut the tail.
-
OH, you will find them at blue lagoon!

Thanx Bennie I think I'll cut the tail has I think keeping the presentation looking as natural as possible with the Garrick seems to be very important. Shot.
Keep it coming gents.

What are you guys using to get your live shad I tend to only get them on a lucky hookup on Yo-zuris otherwise I just pull up the string minus all the hooks.

We use mustad 1. 0 bait rigs when the shad are around, works a charm

I just tie 2 or 3 longshank hooks on dropper loops with a sinker and bait them up. they come up 2 or 3 at a time

Best way!
I don't like shad though! They are last resort baits...
BTW: I just received this email...
"Hi All – I received the following information from a contact. Does anyone know anything more about this – particularly whose boat this was and where they launched from..?
There have been reports of perlemoen poachers launching from unlicensed launch-sites in Transkei. Please keep me informed.
Cheers.
Hi John
Trust you had a good Easter and all that stuff.
I saw a skiboat lying upside down on the rocks at Labanse just north of Mbolompo point. Apparently it happened early last week (JCR comment – that would be week of 25 to 30th April).
Not sure where they launched from but it wasn't Hole-in-the-wall. Somebody thought it may have been from Mpame.
Rumour was that they were trolling for Garrick off Mbolompo and got caught by a set.
If that's the case they would have had to be strong swimmers to get out alive.
Was wondering if there had been any news about it?
Cheers"
Be careful!

Something along these lines ?
Yip the white plastic feather ones, as soon as your normal sabikis start getting bitten of hook up the mustad 1.0 and you pull them up in sixes no bites offs ever with these and 100% success rate.
-

Yes that works but to much work just to catch a shad. :crzy
Just drop those 1.0 mustad white plastic feather rigs and pull them up in sixes.

Best baits for :grk: mackerel, shad, pinkies, silver bream, mozzie.. I forgot to mention I use a small barrel sinker to keep the bait down a bit, as Bennie suggests, I must try the tail trimming trick :corrct: and :shre: everyone.
-
The barrel sinker what size to use and where & how does one place it?
What is the best time to target Garrick, is it essential to be out first light?

all through winter, but for me Aug Sep is the very best. They tend to feed throughout the day unlike couta
-
I use about 1/2 ounce, and place on the leader in front of the swivel (I use about 1.5m - 070 snood to the hook).
-
What a great thread! Cred to all of you!! (clap)
-
Thanks Prego I'll keep an eye out for them
Jean I have tried that but I always seem to pull up small rock cod or worse triggerfish

Thats how I used to do it like that for years until 1 day I nearly came short and sent my boat straight up vertical and nearly turned it upside down it leaving 1 crew in the surf zone. That was it for me and I will never do that again.
I can tell although effective it is way too dangerous.
What I do now is troll livies just behind back line and we throw plugs into the surf zone to draw them out.

100% on the mackerel. and your method

Going to agree with Mike on this one.
I have also avoided targeting Garrick for the same reason.
Far too many close calls.
My Blackberry still gargles from the last wave that stood up on us in front of the Hyper.
Great fish to catch though but please be careful.
All it takes in one "oh-no" second to have a lapse in concentration and mess up..

Yip if you play the odds, one day you will get a dud hand.

The surf around the Umgeni mouth is very unpredictable, that is where you have to be wide awake. The skipper has to be awake all the time. if you dont feel comfortable don't go in, its the same as launching,if in doubt don't do it. I always keep both motors running at all times. Mike I have seen you there a few times.

Yip, I do fish there now and again, mostly for snoek early and then head out, but usually I go straight out and deep, and yes I will try my luck for Garrick there, but never again in the surf zone, I made a promise to myself after my close call.
It is way more than being awake, that surf there just stands up some times and all you need is a break in concentration for a moment and you can go to davies locker.
-
Its not a stunt its his job hehehe.
But on a serious note I don't think I will be going through the surf to target them

same holds for going too far out offshore as well. One day it gets you when you least expect it. Bottom line, be careful and stay within your own limits, do not do it because the next chap does it. I have plenty of experience and hence the warning.

100% correct, but the surf zone is the most dangerous place for a ski boat.
-
OK, enough of the somber stuff, lets get back to :grk:
Like Bennie, I prefer Mackerel and Mozzies for Garrick, and what I like to do is fish with live baits on spinning tackle because in this way you can cast the live bait far, and once you have 2 live baits out on free spooled spinning reels, I then like to have 2 guys casting plugs alternating to draw the garrick towards the live baits.

Exactly what I was thinking, using grinders that way you can avoid the danger zone.

I take it that it would be advisable to have two livies of a different species ( 1 mack and 1 Mozzie) rather that two Macks for instance as they always seem to find each other and knit a nylon jersey?
I know that cutting their tales will prevent this to a point but do you guys ever find this a prob due to the baits being able to swim pretty un-restricted in the zone?
-

I always have 2 different baits out just to improve the buffet for my target species

I don't really find this to be a problem!
If I have two macks - 2 macks go out! If I have 4, 4 macks go out!

Bennie how do you guys put out 4 livies with out getting tangles do you use your out riggers?

2 weighted down, one with say 2ounce and the other with 4 ounce. 2 on balloons, space them, let 15m out on one, 25 on another. You can also blow one balloon up big and the wind will take it. The other small and the current will have more effect on it.

No. they would be trolled baits. I was just generalising. I would rather put 4 macks out before anything else. But if slow trolling for garrick, I suppose the same can apply. Why not put 4 baits out?
-
I fish 3 baits for garrick, one either side and one between the motors deeper than the other 2 (actually on the bottom).

Drifting is max 4 baits similar to what Bennie described, trolling is 5 - 2 on outriggers, 1 on uprigger and 2 down rigged off the corners.

So this weekend we tried out getting some Garrick for the first time. I must say it is super exciting I guess because of the danger involved ( we has humans are crazy :hehe: :hehe: )
Unfortunately we did not get any, if maybe the more experienced guys can point out if we doing it incorrectly or how we can improve our chances.
We found what looked like suitable bank just in front of the breakers. We reversed into the surf so that if a swell picked up we could get the hell out of dodge ASAP. We had 2 live baits out on single hooks through the top lip. Casted them into our desired area and then free spooled to move away from the surf. What we found was that the off shore wind moved as away from the surf at a rapid rate of knots. We kept one reel on free spool & the other witha very light drag, what we found is that the bait on free spool stayed in the surf area. How can we combat the boat moving the boat away and at the same time keeping the baits in the desired area?
