ok ok , some of you might remember that I mentioned about my red head challenge last year.
Last night I started packing my lures and I knew the only way I was gonna honor that commitment was not to pack anything but my red heads.
Another thing I'm gonna experiment with for the very first time is using NO wire on my couta leaders, that is only wire on the hooks. We'll see how that goes.
I did extensive research on the topic and everywhere else in the world the guys are not using it.
Lastly on my 4kg rods I'm going back to single threaded through the bait.
On my heavier 8kg outfits I'm gonna stick with 1 single and 1 treble traces.
As we all know how wire shy couta is, I thought to give this a try with the chance of losing some fish in the process.
-
Jaen,
i havent heard about your red head challenge? Good luck on the traces! hugely excited to hear feed back on this as i have been toying witht the idea but havent crossed over from the dark side yet...

Jean I agree with you on your thoughts on light tackle because I to like to battle with whats on the end of the line instead of just winching it in but now wire?!?! you are really pushing the envelope!!!
:tite mate & let us now how it goes.
Keen to see the results of the red head challenge.

Prego,
Maybe I am. But if you think about the way a couta hits the bait, and when you think about where you hook it 95% of the time, I believe it is do-able.
In Australia and even in mexico and florida they use light fluoro leader straigh onto the hooks. Their hook traces consist of 3 or 4 hooks ganged into each other.
I recon of there is NO wire in front of my squid or duster I may have plenty more strikes.
Regarding the business end (hooks) it will still have the wire, just threaded through the bait (IGFA single hook style).
It's an experiment...but think about it ? I have been whipping for couta with spoons all my life..and I never put wire on any spoon. I can count on 1 hand the total amount of spoons I have lost with bite-offs.
Let see what happens....I'm not leaving my wire traces at home for this one :-)

the very first time I started fishing for sails on 6kg and 4kg I was also pushing it :-) Now I won't have it any other way :-) Without experiments nothing will ever change :-)

I like that guys like yourself experiment so that novices like myself can learn. Needless to say I am a liitle reluctant about the no wire experiment is because I got a hiding over December losing lots of traces that were biten off <: swr.
The key word here is NOVICE. w;k
So this guy here :cout: remains my nemesis :unhap

Sounds like at least you got strikes :-) obviously the way you fish dictates the traces you use.
Fish hit lures and bait different depending on drifting or trolling and trolling speed and direction.
Did you get bite-offs on those traces I made for you?
-
On some of yours, I was on a slow troll and I think we stopped to quickly giving the fish time to come up the line.
Novice error = school fees
I even had live bait with singles on wire on the surface that got bitten off with no line been taken, boy was I confused.

In 25m of water I doubt it but you never can tell, crazier things have happened.
:billf: from the shore :hehe::pot:

did the bite-offs occur on the hook lines or the wire leader? and if so how far from the single hook? (vital info for my new experiment :-) )

If you target sails on 6kg line, what are you targeting on 15kg line?

Striped Marlin and small blues

I hope you ordered a few extra spools of line... Just in case! :shk

I did :-) And it's not a game for sissies. But I bet I'm gonna pull my hair out if something half decent jumps on the line...

Bitten off at the nylon(like I said I think we stopped the boat to quickly) which enabled the fish to come up the line quicker than I could reel in line. <: swr

LOL, You know what most probably happened...has happened to me hundreds of times. It not the actual fish taking your bait that is biting you off, that's highly unlikely. But with rats around (shoal couta) you get one going for the bait and another for your swivel.
I'm sure this is what happened.

update: I spooled 8 reels (4 tld 15's, 2 tls 10's and 2 50h's) yesterday morning...my right hand bicep is now 2 times bigger than before :-)
Also made 45 double hook stiff rigs (pro rigs) complete...and about 60 which is incomplete as I need more heat shrink and more ss sailfish hooks.
Reports are that a couple of fish is coming out but nothing spectacular..
Only booked from 1st March at Vidal...I'm leaving 25th Feb...need some place to stay in St Lucia from Saturday...
-
i have a place that i rent out in st lucia if you interested
-
Hey Jaen,
Those rigs look good! What size wire is that?

Quite thick..brazing wire :-) THEY NEVER BREAK :-)
-

Are you sure it was the spooling that made that bicep bigger, it usually takes years of vigorous action to get that right bicep so big. :crzy

I might be pushing my luck here. What about bite-me jigs at Vidal ? on a flick stick

last week...4 days to go :-)
I packed everything this weekend. THen I took out 70% of the stuff I packed and repacked. Still a lot of stuff :-)
Anyways, I made 2 big flashers last night. Took me about 30min. Used dusters, CD's and papsak for flash. Now I need a plan for deploying the flasher without it getting in the way and also hoe to get it out fast when we get a fish on.
-
Do you think I should get an onda or 2? I don't have any :dunno:
-
I'll keep on chatting to myself here :-)
Got the bait sorted today, 28 boxes of sards. Now I just need some mackerels? anybody from Durbs care to share :geet :geet

I'm so stoked, just want to get on the water. As always I think I have enough tackle packed for a year, but you know how it goes :-)
Just hope we can get some fish

Jaen,
28 Kg of sards? Plus 1 zillion islander lures, marlin lures, and you want mackies????
Hope you planning to sleep on land? LOL...

Guys what your are all forgetting is that Vidal is remora country, so a sard won't stay on the hook for hours. I bet you I'll run short and need sards in the last week.
Marcos, those Mackies are magic man, you know what I mean :-) In the old days we didn't use Mackerels, we used bonies and maasbankers.
O well, we'll see.

I must say, you guys up country plan well. We tend to chuck a few boxes in the car, buy some bait the day before and go! If we luck, we have a good friend bring us a few half beaks! Forgot to thank you for that John F!
Must be fun planning all this for sooooo long!

I only fish these longer trips maybe twice a year ....so I plan well and try to enjoy it even before I go. But don't worry Bennie, in a couple of days I'll post some results of all the planning...even if it is just a bikini on the beach at Vidal :-)
-
Don't mention it Bennie! I'm sorry I could not join you! Hope you can use those HB in Durbs!
Jaen, you got this one much better planned than the Apollo 11 mission!!! Enjoy it, and please don't forget your camera(s)!!!

Was it foul hooked?

DOn't know if will put up much of a fight :)
They are incredibly interesting creatures, found in all temperate oceans. They had one at Two Oceans in Cape Town that was totally tame, they found it in the harbour squashed between boats I think.
Also they heaviest bony fish, max recorded weight is 2,400kg!
-
DOn't know if will put up much of a fight :)
Let me clear that up, it doesn't....because it does not know it is hooked. once it finds out it uses all of it's weight against you like a land rover in 1st gear low range :-)
-
gonna start a new topic for the report and pics
-
:wlcmbk Jaen, really excited to read your report and see the pics
