During a discussion with the owner of a major tackle shop in Dbn this morning, got the impression
that
anglers are buying painted metal spoons, bullet spoons, spoons with holograpgics stuck on etc.
more and more.
Do the fish really prefer these painted spoons or is it a question of catching the angler? I may be
wrong
but I don't think a shad or Natal Snoek does not give a damn about holographics when charing in for
potential meal.(?)
Also, with the Snoek running wild on the East coast presently, why are some guys using solid
metal spoons (which sinks deep) when the fish are within a meter of the surface chasing sprat?
Would'nt a shallow diving lure or a light-weight metal spoon result in more strikes?
(Sorry for all the questions)

Reckon most fancy lures catch the angler rather than the fish!! :lolo:
My opinion is that flash or shininess definitely plays a part... use a dull spoon and it will catch squat, but shine it up and the Shad will go mal for it. So I'm all for flash/shine/glint/glitter, so a hologram will work to catch the available light and provide a flash. Eg: Aubrey da Gama lures have had the holographic flash on them for years, and they work superbly.
As far as colours go - I believe it's all to do with Contrast, rather than the colour itself. The contrast of distinct colours or a pattern against a background is worth more than anything else IMO...
:dunno: my 2c.

It makes sense, thanks, REEFMAN

I have used the Aubrey da Gama lures extensively for Leervis/Garrick and I always add some extra bling to it. I play around with different colored holographic tape and my catch rate definitely increased. With regards to spoons I think the more shine the better the results. I bought the tape from the "Crazy Store" here in town and it had cost about R30-40.
-
Sorry, I forgot to mention that sometimes I would stick some of the gold tape to one side of a silver spoon to give it the "Sheppie Bomber" effect. The only down side is that it does not last too long if the fish have sharp teeth. :unhap
-
Thanks for the info, SAfish. I am going to look out for that tape (maybe at Walton's)
Pity, I was at Knysna in December. (Well, mostly Plett).
I don't mind replacing tape damaged a a catch!!
-
Another thing to help it stick better is to give it a good coat of clear nail polish. I can go and have a look to see if they have in stock and maybe send it to you?
-
The kind offer is appreciated, but let me try and find it first in Dbn.
I'm sure it will be available somewhere.
Thanks, again. If I don't find it I will contact you.
-
OK, no problem. :uarocks

I got some at the crazy store here on the Bluff.

This is invaluable info guys! :tkx:
I have never used a spoon before, unless it was to eat soup. No, i never use a spoon and fork to roll my spagetti! Never! :hnthnt:
-
I think I wll have to give it a try. :happ:

As for the heavy spoon, the reason is that you can retrieve them really fast without them jumping out the water. You still need to keep your rod tip down. The idea is for them to run in the top 50cm, and at speed! Excites the fish, and doesn't give them a chance to inspect what they are hunting.
-
Thanks Nico!! The guys I saw were holding their rods highly elevated. What you say makes perfect
sense

Hi PH, there is a Crazy store in Pine Crest, The old Sanlam centre in Pinetown, Have never been in there so dont know if they stock the tape or not, but if one has it they all must have it.
-
Thanks, John.
I will pop in there when we go to Inanda Dam again but in the mean time I'll take up
Bennie's offer

:tkx:Thx Bennie. And thx for all your help in the past.
-
Arrrghhh I just tried the Crazy store in Norwood, JHB... :sadd they've never heard of it! Anyone know where we can get the tape in GP...?
Oh and :welc: Swagman!

I have got a sheet or two

I have got a sheet or two
http://www.glowgear.co.za/products/reflective-trim/ (http://www.glowgear.co.za/products/reflective-trim/) Look at the bottom of the page. Seems it is made by 3M
-
Hi Swagman, Thanks for that. I think you are referring to reflective tape. What I have in mind is
holographic tape, ie. made by lazer and looks like the one side of a CD. There are plenty of
gift wrapping paper like that around but not adhesive tape.
AH (my wife) said there is a Crazy Store in the Westwood Mall. I'll pop in there on my way to graft this
morning, otherwise I'll get some from Bennie's shop.
-
You will see that some of the descriptions on the page refers to prismatic reflective tape. This is so called holographic tape. I have in the past imported it from Janns Netcraft and Souder's Fishing Tackle in the States and have a few sheets here. Changes reflective colours as you move it. These guys sell it at R22 per meter. They are in Stellenbosch. www.glowgear.co.za (http://www.glowgear.co.za) glow@glowgear.co.za
However, you can be sure that the stuff Bennie has is the right stuff.
The good stuff which is hard to come by is stretchable. I am about to import some if I can't source it locally

Sorry I missed that on the page.
Stretchable tape would be fantastic to wrap it around curves, etc.
-
I will let you know if I find some of the stretchable locally or if I am going to import.
-
That will be great, thanks.
-
That will be great, thanks.
PH, I have found a source in the states for Stretchable tape. The description is vague so I am non sure if it is holographic. It is described as Holoform reflective tape. I queried the description and was told that it is "holographic but not prismatic". I am going to bring in a few sheets to check out.
-
It does sound a bit confusing!!
It will be interesting to see what it is. PM me the costs. I will may share the costs. w;k
-
Try Do-It moulds, they have a agent in SA. In fact the shop is in Toti. Its called South Gate Tackle centre if I am not mistaken.
-
Nearly forgot. Very warm welcome Swagman. :welc:

Thanks Fritz, I will investigate
