:tkx: I got mine about 2 years ago and I have never opened it. Maybe it is a good idea to give it a good service.  :hehe:

Reefz, are the 2 drag spring washers meant to be a little bent or should they be flat? :dunno:

Yes they must be bent... that way they act as a spring against each other...

Thanks, I guess that means I will have to strip and investagate further to find the fault. It sticks every now and then, sad thing is this reel as hardly worked.

Check that the Drive shaft bearing collar is not in upside down?

Have you checked the Drag washers, that they aren't mangled?

Drive shaft bearing was rusted up, have cleaned evertything up, seems that it working fine now. Won't know for sure till I get my handle back.

Great tut + cred  :tkx:

Hi mate, thank you for that information, it's brilliant. One question please, does it have to be Teflon grease on the drag washers?, could I use ordinary red lithium grease?
Title: Re: DAIWA SEALINE SL30 SH - SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE
Post by: REEFMAN on October 19, 2016, 12:36:15 PM
Lithium Grease tends to become sticky and clogs up after a while, makes a horrid mess!
Alan Tani the reel guru doesn't like using it on reels, but particularly not on Drags. Having said that, Lithium grease is better than no grease for general reel maintenance, but I would definitely go with Teflon based grease for Drags. Specific Drag grease - best is Cal's, but most tackle shops should stock Drag grease.

thank you very much for the reply, I ended up using teflon spray, and just a merest touch of grease. I'll get the right stuff and wash the drag washers in petrol and regrease next time. Thank you so much for the excellent advice and information.

hey gents, last night i got the sl30 on the bench for its annual service, because the drive shaft bearing is an sealed item and because a good number of years gone by, i decided to remove the permanent side seals/shields. although i prefer for my spool bearings to be sleeveless (i'm a speed freak hehehehe), i'm kind of unsure i have done the right thing or should i say acceptable thing with this particular bearing, fortunately me other reels have bearings that can be open and closed. there was nothing wrong with the bearing after revealing its guts but left me contemplating the way forward. the only thing i could do was to pack it with yamaha marine grease because of its sticky, thick viscosity. did i trump it or not

All my reel bearings have the covers removed. That way you can inspect the guts quickly and efficiently. Once packed with a good grease, they should be good until the next service.
So it's a Trump for sure!  :corrct:

Sorry for the Necro post! Inspired by Kent's recent post of Kob on spoon and The Lazy thumb thread, I acquired a secondhand Daiwa Sl30sh for $150 AUD. After work this afternoon I stopped by Bunnings to get some Benzene to clean the reel. To my shock you can't buy benzene in Australia! It's regulated! The person looked at me if I was crazy when I asked them for it.

So Reefman and wise people of UA, what can I use instead of Benzene?

I've got brand spanking new 0.4mm line, 50lb fluro leader and a big itch to clean this reel and get casting... Please help...

PS... I can't find a 10 to 11 ft rod in Australia to pair with the Sl30sh. There is only 1 rod remotely suitable in Australia... Assassin Surf Master in 12ft...

Mornings Nathan , clean that SL with normal warm soapy water...rinse off and let it air dry , BUT before you wash it , tighten the drag ,,, once rinsed , loosen the drag , then while the clutch is engaged , turn the handle holding the spool to let tyhe drag bind and work smoothly...

NOW , if you strip it , only one thing to clean the insides of that SL , its all brass and stainless in there , good ole fashioned petrol , once all parts are cleaned , wash off in warm soapy water , let air dry and then lightly  grease the pinion and main gear with truck rubber grease , it dispels water like no bodies business...use very small quantities of oil on the cluch slider plate , I use thin transformer oil...

BUT , the SL30 is spot on for throwing spoon for kobbies , a SL30 does not mind a swim neither...

When you get imto it , you can whatsapp me on 0823125168 and will show you how to put leather drag washer in there...

One more thing , if the two spool bearings are good , DO NOT put oil or grease on them , clean them in petrol and then air dry them , then use a NON silcone based spray and spray them with that....you will thank me later... :hnthnt:
