Hi Reefman,
I hope that you are doing well I know that this post is not new but I have a question regarding the speedmaster.
I have one but am having issues with the drag not tightening do you think that by removing a set of washers from the drive shaft it will improve the drag on the reel as the ones that is in pictures 21 and 22 of your tutotrial.
Your insight in this regard would be much appreciated

Removing pieces is definitely not the answer. When you end up with a couple of spares after a reel service its a sure sign that something has gone wrong.
Could you clarify what you mean by the drag not tightening? Are you not able to get all the washers and bearings back on the drive shaft(Too many pieces hence wishing to remove the washers)? Or does the drag not create enough pressure when tightened up?
-
Did the problem with the Drag start after you serviced the reel, or did it just start up out of the blue?
If suddenly, then it could be that the top drive shaft Bearing is seized;
If it's after you opened it up, then it could be many things.
1. Look at the 2 drag spring washers, they should be aligned () not ((
2. Make sure you have all the parts installed according to the schematic drawing

Hi Gents,
Thanks for the reply it just has not been working since I bought it from the dealer I have tightened up the star completely already with no effect I know of someone else also that has the same issue also bought new but the drag is not functioning so now I just use it to target fish in the surf zone and hoping that a proper steenie don't come pass and take the bait cause then I am screwed

The reel is due for a service thou I will sit with it again and try and figure out what is going on with it otherwise I need to look at obtaining a new reel or take it to somebody that has more experience with things like this to have a look
-
But did you check the drag washer alignment? ;()

Hello Reefman
I tried to PM you but for some reason does not allow me to do so. I trust you are well.
Could you perhaps supply me with bearing sizes for Shimano Speedmaster IV
Much appreciated

Sorry George, don't have them. Last time I did a Speedmaster was back on 2007!
Maybe someone who has a Speedmaster and has done the bearings will help?
-
Thank for the reply. I will have to steel one and strip it w;k

Howsit?
Rory Barnes did a rebuild for me on a Speedmaster some time back... like probably six years ago. I managed to find this price list that references the carbontex drag washers and ceramic bearings. The list refers to Shimano TLD20/40 which is the same as the Speedmaster. I ordered the parts from Durban if I remember correctly. Hope this helps. I ended giving the reel to my Boet with a 13.6 Rugged rod......
