I was spinning at Blue Lagoon on Monday morning, using a t30 silver spoon. I removed all barbs in the treble hooks. While retrieving slowly something hit the spoon very violently and started taking line at great speed. With the adrenalin pumping I reeled in to set the hooks; whatever was hooked continued taking line, and suddenly it was quiet. The hooks came off, with much disappointment I reeled in. My hooks were sharp but still I lost the fight. I then came to a conclusion that from now hence forth I'll never use barbless hooks save for the circle hooks.

thats unfortunate, next time try change the trebles on your spoon to single hooks, the gamakatsu soi ring 5/0 and 6/0 are the perfect hooks for this. Trebles have proven to be problematic over the years. hope this helps

Tough luck... although it's hard to say the lack of barbs are to blame in this case, I agree with Action Man... get rid of the trebles (=trouble)! I changed all my rear hooks (on spoons, rappies, etc.) to J hooks after loosing a BIG fish during a comp!

Unlucky bud, I know how you feel!

I think barbless hooks have their place and barbed hooks do to. I recently cut up all my shad traces because they all had barbless hooks and waiting for a wave to wash over the front rocks to bring your fish over resulted in dropping fish everytime. This is not to say that a better angler wouldnt have managed but heck Im not like action man

I always find it very amusing when guys loose fish on barbless hooks and then lay the blame there.
What would you do if you had lost that fish with barbed hooks??
Fish fall off from time to time.........thats why its called fishing and not catching!

Thats why I added that a better angler would have landed those fish. Unfortuantely since I dont get to the coast that often its unlikely Ill become that angler

I fished stickbaits and poppers with J hooks for a while, and nothing stuck. Changed to ST-66 and suddenly I landed fish. Every thing has its time and place, but I have too many on my list to change to barblless singles (yet).
