Title: Where to fish at Kosi Mouth
Post by: huntley on September 21, 2022, 11:09:14 AM
I am going to Kosi Mouth for 5 days next week and am hoping to get some spinning in. Where would be the best place to throw plugs, spoons and plastics around the mouth? Thanks in advance

I would guess that anywhere in the area is good fare depending on incoming or outgoing tide. I would however definitly take snorkelling gear along as, if things have not deteriorated too much in recent years, the snorkelling on the opposite bank was epic. That will also give you a good idea of where to target what.

You can't fish in the 'aquarium' (the estuarine reef just upstream of the mouth on the south side. Snorkel only)

The mouth feeds into a big reef that runs parallel to the shore for a good few hundred metres. Depending on conditions and/or tides you can choose what looks fishy. Just remember that if you fish the South bank, keep an eye on the tides or you are likely to be swimming back across the mouth at high tide!
The outflow from the estuary feeds towards the north as it enters the sea - that area is not a bad spot at first and last light. During the day I think there is usually a lot of activity there that limits the fishing as the water is quite shallow and usually clear.

If you're happy to target smaller fish then small lures in the 'bay' between the mouth and the barrier reef about 150-200m out can be productive all day.

When spinning from the beach, I've found that the south side heading towards Bhanga has been more productive than heading north. But that could just be me!

Have a look at google maps to see where the reef structure is.

Thanks for the replies. I am back from my trip and as it turned out did not get to may opportunities to fish. The gate times don't make it any easier.
The snorkling was great and the area is stunning. Hopefully get back there sometime soon.
