Title: Leerfish prey
Post by: Dereche on July 11, 2020, 12:18:21 PM
Hey  :grk:  my name Mike,
i am living in mallorca.

The most leerfish that the people are catching here, have empty stomachs.
So my question is, how does it looks like with your leerfish catches.
Which prey/fishs did you found in the stomachs?
I am just interrested in this species and want to learn a bit more about them.

Blessings to all of you (clap)

Interesting way to learn about your quarry... But it's a brilliant idea... I would probably have tested it out too if I had it in me to kill my catch... But I wouldn't mind know what the fish feed most on in the area you're targeting them... For both fresh and salt water fish... I do remember reading a book here that went into detail about what bait garrick love, I'll check for you then let you know... That's all the help I can offer

We release most of our leervis so we don't look in their stomachs, our stocks long ago collapsed due to their accessibility and days of past of large breeding fish being taken out and killed in large numbers, but you can observe them freely feeding when there is bait around and see what they eat on as they corral the bait into balls and smash it or just smash it... Also they puke up their food sometimes when you land them..

I get most of mine on a "wayne stanley" plug made out of nothing much different from breadboard but that is not their normal diet! They eat mullet freely, small sparids like what we call karanteen here and small blacktail which occur by you as far as i know as well, and they eat mackerel, sardines and anchovies and other small prey species like that. I don't know if squid forms a major portion of diet but there may be research..Old books make no mention of squid but i am sure they will eat a squid, baby occy or cuttlefish as everything does.

Thanks a lot! Here in Mallorca , i found some diplodus sargus in the stomachs, but most of the time they are empty.
I release the most leerfishs as well, but sometimes i keep one for eating.
The most People here dont know how to catch them, so we got a lot of leerfishs around.

You are lucky bro, post some pics of your leervis(fish) when you can! They are my bread and butter sportfish, love them to bits! We spin for them mainly where I fish, further up north in natal its both livebait and spinning, spoons and plugs are the norm, light 20lb rigs and ten to eleven foot rods and 5000 size shimano reels as they are clean fighters..Yeah hook one over 15kg and you know all about it, nearly been spooled once or twice, you think you hooked a tuna!

There is a picture of my best one  :grk: :happ: it was a big battle.
My question was more interested, in what they eat, than to know which bait catch them.
To know what they are eating in the nature without a hook :blktl: I found some articles from some universitys of southafrica.
If somebody want to read it, i can Post the link
