Title: Please help with a saltwater spinning setup advice
Post by: PRENO on August 26, 2019, 04:48:19 PM
Hi Guys

I am thinking of trying to try some surf spinning but I do not know where to start.
I am looking for a rod and reel +- R 3000.00 budget.
Please can you guys advise me on which rod and reel would be perfect, I will be spinning from the shore so I need distance, will cast jig heads and spoons around the 1.5 to 3 oz
Will 25lb or 30Lb braid be okay?
I am in the Bluff area and my wife works certain weekends, so I have the opportunity to try and spin in the mornings and late afternoons.
Please help.

thank you

Hi there

Looks like we are in the same boat.

I am also looking to get a decent outfit for surf lure fishing. There are many rods, reels and braid out that's new

Should be interesting to hear about the new toys

I heard good things about the archipelago rods

Can any one add more ito the above?

Regards

With regards to the rod, I am not sure between the Archipelago 11ft or 12ft  or the Assassin Amia Zero 11ft XH Kob special.

Get whats suited for your lures to throw..and go give the rods a good feel and decide what will be easier, on you, to wave around all day long, a 11 or 12' and what will get your lure to where you want to get it..? Personally I'd go shorter and lighter on the rod and lighter on the line to get the distance, fishing 20lb (rated but breaks at 30lb) or 30lb (real 30lb like HMP) or even a real 25lb or real 20lb..For beach fishing and intended application. For rocks or heavier stuff different story.

IMO for starters spend R2400 on a good reel and 20lb braid and get yourself something like the Okuma Revenger Pro 10' or 11' for R600 - at a later stage upgrade your rod if you need to.
I recently went through a rod search(I have the reel) and ended up with this Okuma 10' - fantastic rod for the price!!

I use Shimano Stradic FJ 5000 paired up with Assassin Amia. Can throw a GT Ice cream out of sight

I have a Diawa Excellor and Okuma Salina 55 that can both work but if I bought now it would probably be a Stradic as it is the best bang for buck, the problem is that with the braid it will be well over R3k. Lower down the Sedona is decent and Diawa/Penn/Okuma all have good offerings around the R2k -3k mark.

Just double check the retrieve rate on the nasci, not sure what it is, a stradic 5000 is abouts spot on the reel you need..I got 2 of them. Old and new. Old still perfect after 5 odd more years,a literal ton of gamefish later. Cannot fault those babies for light spinning. Had an exceller reel originally that didn't last a month of fishing in salt before catastrophic failure and then I got charged for repairs under warranty so I gave the reel away and never bought another daiwa spinner. If the Nasci or others has the same retrieve I'd say go for it..that said BG's also getting rave reviews and apparently the newer penns are also performing, but had my issues with penn too although my old penn spinners are STILL grinding along after all this time and a few open heart surgeries so gotta give to them, they have slayed some serious fish. But my first choice is stradic. I own a sustain but dont see much difference and the sustain is quite a bit more in price.

I use the 10' archipelago and an exceller 9'6" xxxh extended to 10' for the same application, both paired with stradic 5000's new and old. The old set still gets the most use but the new rod is a beaut..I use a shorter rod as I fish a lot of rock points and I have very long arms so shorter rods suit me to fish all day and I have like 3ft long arms so a extra foot on the rod doesn't make too much difference to my cast distance. A 12' rod is much more of a las to spin with all day. My x heavy spinning gear with 0.55mono is 10'..I surf fish with a 13', scratch with a 12'...

You gotta feel the rods for yourself.. Reelwise..Dugong gave you the right advice, spend more on a reel..The rod you can upgrade later. You don't have to go for more rod than the archipelago, awesome rods. As good or better than some rods at double its price point..As good components as you need, eyes and setup, reelseet etc..lovely rods. Also can't fault them, yet  ;) Still gotta get stuck into some big fish with mine..

HMP the best braid I've been able to find, on par with the jap stuff in my pleb opinion..long lasting, reliable, smooth, supple..colour wears out quite quick which suits me as I got over fish of all species chasing and nipping at my little fluorescent leader knot when spinning! I'm over fluoro braid LOL..

What do I do, getting the Stradic C5000XG with braid is about R 3000, Do i get the Penn slammer or the Stradic, sorry guys I don't know now. :cnfzd

When you go cast that lot for the first time..boy are you gonna be chuffed with your decision.. Such a nice setup.. :geet About as good as light beach spinning outfit as you would want to get..You'd have to spend 20k on titanium guides and a stella to top that combo! And it would only marginally better.

Good afternoon Guys

I purchased the rod and reel @ Fishing Addicts here in Clairwood.
They loaded the braid for me also.

I just need a few pointers.

1) The leader line? how many lb leader should I get and how long should it be? and should I join it using the FG knot?
2) Can I attach a clip on the end?
3) Should I change the treble hooks on spoons for single hooks?
4) Any place around the Bluff where I can try to use my setup, Wanted to try Ansteys, but hijackings are becoming more frequent and I don't think there is any fish there anymore, did not get a chance last weekend due to the windy conditions.

thank you

Use a swannel clip, maybe a 0.8mm to 1mm stainless wire? Go lighter depends on your species though 0.8mm should be more than fine.
I'd use a 0.6mm mono leader on that with FG knot at my second eye when lure at casting drop, some FG a braid casting leader slightly heavier..FG braid to braid works great contrary to what I'd think?! :) If heavier reefs around and bigger fish maybe a 0.7mm leader on that setup. I don't fish your waters though so get some more feedback.
Use a oval split ring (set the hooks back for better hook up and easy to change hook/lure without having to use splitring pliers) and mustad inline jigging hooks worked great for me, over size them so the gape is a little wider than the spoon. If you hook a big garrick that should go swimming back, fight him gently as often the big singles can dig an eye out if you fight hard. Dug a few eyes out myself and caught a few fish doing fine but missing an eye.
Damn my couz is actually rough and tough, haven't spoken to him in ages, didn't realise it was getting THAT rough there..can't help you with spots either..sorry bud. Steenie on here should be able to assist?

You made a mistake on your choice of reel bud especially if you bought from Fishing Addicts. I can see everyone here patting you on the back because you got a Stradic XG but that was perhaps purely given then the choice between the XG and the Slammer.

If you did use the reel, dont use it, take it back..

(I can hear the gnashing of teeth already)

No mistake made here, Stradic all the way. I have been using a 5000XG doing light spinning of the boat catching catching loads of fish. This reel punches way above its weight. Penn reels have also been part of the setups on the boat but have left the scene long time ago, main gears dont last.

I would look at the daiwa BG 3000 or 4000 . They go for around R2000 and punch way above that price mark .

Huh Kes? :) What is your reasoning behind that advice, please do tell..Also, have you personally fished/spun with a stradic (new or old model no matter) before and for a few times a week for an extended period, like over a season or three? Just curious here..I haven't met many yet that have, and don't recommend the reel. There are reasons.

I borrowed a slammer once when my sustain was in for a service..Can blame the reel or blame the braid, both played their part, but I was the only one not to catch a fish that day as I spent the day picking out windknots and retying my leader knot, while watching everyone casting @ shoals. These days I spin with mono to avoid that as much as I can and then when I cant avoid the braid one of my stradics come out to play. Last braid session was a nightmare anyway, windknots, eyewraps, throwing lures off, even though setup is as "windknot proof" as one could be, reminds me why I hate the stuff irrespective of the reel its on. LOL

Fishing Addicts has the Sustain FI for R50 more... :)

Based on my experience, Sustain FTW..

I fish a Slammer 6500HS on my light set up and there is one thing for sure when I go out, the Slammer is the first reel in my bag.

okay buddy, its really not a problem.

Thanks for the help, and hopefully others will look at your comment and buy the sustain. :tkx:
But as for me I am happy with my purchase.

The new sustain is 3200 reel only.
The stradic I bought was 3200 including braid and a few new spoons and lures.

So for me I think its worth it my buy as I am a newbie and don't want to destroy an expensive reel.

Please can we close off this topic as I have been assisted thoroughly.

Thanks to all the Guys who assisted me and hopefully my new post will be about a fish i have caught.

Shot bud for clarifying..and yeah above a certain point it just becomes personal preference..Also to second that the sustain is a lovely reel, I have one too!

Good advert for fishing addict, good prices. Yeah enjoy the setup Preno..if your distance is needing to improve just drop your braid down to 20 lb for a casting topshot at some point..Once your reel needs a bit of filling, it won't cost you more in the long run. I only replace the top 1/3 of my braid at any point, mostly. If it is the 25lb HMP ignore the thinner line advice as that is abouts what you want for distance verse strength and abrasion resistance for the medium and lighter spinning.

The Daiwa vs Shimano battle has bee raging for decades now. There is no end in sight with the onset of sponsored anglers.

I used to be in the Daiwa corner but now I just buy all different brands.

Guys quick question wrt the Stradic handle. How does the handle work? changing to left or right side. I see the Stella has two input shafts due to it being threaded...like the Stradic. The stardic comes with a left and right hand shaft too?
