Good day all, I trust you guys had a great Easter... :yipee:
I am looking for some advice on a setup for bottom fishing. What budget rods are there that are value for money that I should look at? KP size and braid test strength and what braid to use?
Any advice is appreciated :fshn:

Imz, our set ups are, a 9inch KP, the brown wooden one worth the money, don't bother with the black plastic reels. Reels we have loaded with 100lbs braid. The rods we have for bottoms are 9ft Elbe bottom sticks 15-30kg you also get the 30-50kg but i find the 15-30 you feel the bites better, very reliable i have hooked some decent fish only to loose them because my traces failed and the african rock fish a couple times where i almost doubled the rod and it held so good value for money. We get most of our tackle from Township Hyper Chatsworth. Looking at +- R500 for the reel + - R500 for the rod and then depends what braid you buy, we had a mate order from China at a good price and it is still doing the job.

Thank you Umpa Lumpa that helps a great deal. I went out Friday morning for a trawl and did some bottoms off Durban...unfortunately the only setup I had was an elbe musselcracker and a 10 inch Kp with mono- total overkill
I will definitely get the setup you mentioned as it sounds reasonable. May I ask what braid you use?

I cant remember the braid name, but mine is the multi colour, every 10m meters it is different colour, helps when you fishing 40 50 80m you more less know how much much more you have to wind.

Wslm. Mike had me going too. I thought my bottom fishing days were over until he got to the shad part and could not keep a straight face anymore.........

Has anyone tried the Elbe Explorer rod? Haven't seen one but had a recommendation on it.

Imz, i use the explorer rods and find them to be excellent.they are a bit long but that gives you a bit of leverage on the fish.as Umpa mentioned, i also use the woodgrain finish KP.this combo works for me.

Dont mean to hijack your thread Imz but Im hoping Umpa Lumpa or another KP fundi can shed some light.
When using braid on the bigger KP's, how do you keep the braid evenly spread/centered when winding up?
I have a a big old school one (with the drag to keep it from spinning) but when I wind up all of the braid seems to collect on the inside wall of the reel instead of the center.
Ive seen some of the durban guys have a stainless ring attached just above the rod grip but just trying to figure out the best way to do this.

Morning Darren, yes you can buy the rings, i use one so when winding up you can wind on evenly and you don't cut your fingers with the braid (been there done that) it helps span. You tie some line or braid to your rod grip, give about 5 to 10cm length(which ever length you are comfortable with) and attached the ring, run your braid through the ring when running through the eyes.

The line bunching on one side is due to the real seat and spindle being bent slightly. While the real is on the rod bend the whole reel sideways to recentre the m8dle of the spool with the rod. The force at the bottom of a 10 inch reel is significant and there is only a 20mm piece of steel there but it is easy twisted with the leverage. I have never used the steel rings and having but my fingers on the braid yet. Well not by feeling the line for bites etc.

My commercial fishing mate that fishes heavy braid on the big KP on deep reefs uses this solution, don't know if mentioned already but he just takes a very large swivel and cable ties it to the rod up from reel at the right spot, all his bottom rods have this adaption. Cheap and nasty and functional guide ring..

Instead of a swivel to guide the line on a snap swivel works a bit better, what traces do you guys use?

Easy fix + cheap ! I have seen " rod eyes' tied with cable ties as well, so also an easy fix, buy some eyes... then just cable tie them at your preference as in spacing etc.
