Howsit man, take a look at the new Metaloid rods from Okuma. All Fuji components and very decent range for casting too. I have the 13ft6 6-8oz and its really awesome. They also make a 12 and a 13ft6. You can get them around durban between 2k and about 2600. Pair that with a Bg6500 or even a BG8000 if you want better line capacity (that'll be around 2500 - 3000 depending where you go), and braid etc you can shop around for too. I got the Azores 80 on my metalloid with 50lb jdb backing and 40lb grinder braid on top - was just over 4k for everything and its a really sweet setup. Try look for some info on those rods.  :tite

Mates who've bought the bg are stoked, mates that bought the azores sold them soon after..I've fished neither..one mates comment on the azores was he took the first reel back thinking the grinding was a defective gear but the replacement was the same so he sold it. i'd say shimano but then you are looking mid.

Interesting about the Azores reels. I have both the 55 and the 80 and no problems so far. Decent drag on these reels and fairly well magnetically sealed.

Maybe also look at the  Spheros & Soccoro, and some of the Penn grinders.

Bought me a 2nd Okuma Metalloid 7ft jigging rod for the boat as the first one handled a 25kg Hammer with ease so had to get a 2nd one, paired this one with a BG8000, bought both from Fishermans warehouse DBN (cheapest out of all the outlets), 2300 for the BG8000 and 800 for the rod, so would agree the Metalloid rods are value for money and the 8000 is smooth as anything.

The 20k is the more popular choice and only difference between the 2 is the spool size. Those reels are heavy though. Good luck with your final choice  w;k

thanks angler 21

here i go again duh
between the saragosa and daiwa saltist which will be a better option?
i believe the saltist is a much lighter reel.
most probably going to pair it with a makaira  :dunno:

Hi DK

The new Saltist does look and feel strong. I had a close up of Dean Pretorius's one a few weeks back.

Saltist 6500 with the 8000 spool. Lighter than the Gosa 20k

Deez what is your planned target species?

The 20k and 25k gosa's are real tanks designed for battling truly large fish. IMO we are talking Transkei giants.

If you are looking primarily at KZN species (Sandies, greys, diamonds etc) I would say that the 10 000 size shimanos are better suited seeing as they are not nearly as cumbersome.
