Who was the original manufacturer of these lures?-there are so many fakes of this lure doing the rounds now how does one tell if it's a genuine or a fake?
-
The originals was from Maria... You can still buy the Duplex casting lures and Loaded stickbaits here in SA. Both fantastic lures.
Not sure but heard a rumour that the factory burned down recently ( hear say) so there might be a shortage on the cards with all Maria lures soon
-
Sorry but 2nd part of your question:
Only the original has the writing "Onde Onda" on the back of the lure... the others are all copies
-
Cheers for that Werries - Are they supplied loose or in marked packaging?
-
Usually sold in a Box with MARIA lures title. The lures look like so...
Haven't seen the real thing in 4 or 5 years now. Still one of my favourite light tackle lures.
Kingfisher make a cheap copy of it now.
-
It seems like all the lures that have reached "legend" status are becoming a hidden treasure - besides the onde onda, when was the last time you saw a sea iron super sprat in the tackle shop? & if you do know of a shop in Jhb that has either lure, please let me know!
-
I will.pay any price for a Maria Viva Parade 56g in green or blue, pure kingfish candy
-
It is also a sin to not to grab any opportunity to lay your hands on any original onde onda.
The weights are placed perfectly in the originals, they do swim with a better action, and will outfish any fake, especially when targeting natal snoek (queen mackeral).
Some original Ondas on the left with fakes on the right
-
:shk That is quite a collection you have there. :Like: :appr:
-
Thanks, 9 more on the way from Japan as we speak, picked them of ebay 2 days ago
-
Now that's what a small (just the basic and absolutely necessary) tackle collection should look like, just the bare basics!!!
And as you can never have enough, I'm so happy to hear you are growing the collection😂😂😂😂
-
At long last, somebody that understands, pheew. :yipee: :tkx:
-
Sardinella, (or anyone else that has them) could i ask you to do me a favour & measure the length of the onde ondas you've got & the weight in grams.
There is a supplier in Japan that only gives the length of the lure as a reference & no weight. The lengths that are available are 120,100,85 mm thanks.
-
Those are the 3 standard lengths in which the ondas was made.
-
Ja, but i need to know how much each length weighs
-
120mm - 50g
100mm - 35g
85mm - 23g
-
Thankyou !!!
I see there are a lot of colour variations available, what colour/colours are the most effective on the KZN north coast?
-
Purple is my go to Onda!
-
From the beach, darker colours seems to prevail, but for snoek white is the standout color
-
When the snoek have lockjaw, we add some green with a permanent marker on the the belly or gold on the back with nail polish
-
As good as the Onda is there are plenty good Japanese replacements that are better
-
Care to name them? - & would they be fished from beach or boat?
-
They all sitting in my garage in st Lucia will post a picture next time I'm down
-
Duo is the one brand that has come to mind

Agreed, the Duo is in the same class as the Onda, but it's double the price!!! Are there any other worthy affordable replacements that one could confidently turn to?
-
Does anyone have video of the action of the original Onda?

You could look at Maria's replacement for the Onde Onde- the Blues Code I & II. Ima Honey Trap 95S is very good too.

The tackle shops here in Singapore have so many more sinking stick baits. But I won $300 worth of gift vouchers to a fishing pond, and they have a shop attached that sells An Lures Prew 120. Designed for Snakehead and PNG Black Bass. https://www.eastackle.com/c-1341-an-lure-prew-120-sg-sinking-pencil-bait.aspx (https://www.eastackle.com/c-1341-an-lure-prew-120-sg-sinking-pencil-bait.aspx)
But this one might be your answer- Duel Adagio Heavy http://www.duel.co.jp/english/products/adagio-heavy-105125 (http://www.duel.co.jp/english/products/adagio-heavy-105125)

Nice Jacques! - seems you are spoilt for choice over there! Anything a little heavier-same external features around the 50 gram mark for beach casting?

Stickleback, I will have to look when I next go to Beach Rd (6 tackleshops in a 300m radius, all stocked with some top class gear). it's not really something I have been looking for lately, more into UL and estuary fishing these days. Guys here don't believe you can catch on cheap gear. Poppers at R1000 mark and such like. Have a look at East Coast Angling Guides on Facebook- there are some sweet looking stickbaits there. Otherwise Doug Swannel could have something.
-
East Coast angling guides is Greg Kellerman, on the forum as Noweeds...

Sardinella, I think I have a number of the Viva Parades from Maria. Lying in a box somewhere. Didn't know they were so effective
-
Can I buy them of you :-)
They work well for the Geets here at St Lucia, especially the lighthouse area
-
.
-
Here my flick stick lures still have a few original ondas
-
Nice collection there

Ok now I'm a bit deurmekaar, more than usual :hyst:
What are these then?
-
the top ones are the maria viva parade swimming lures ( i had seven, lost them all when someone throw in a few flukes into them, they melted)
dont know the ones in the bottom pick, sorry
-
Viva Parades work like he'll. . Still got a few in tackle box. Size and colour important.
-
I am quite surprised that nobody is making their own. Silicon molds provide exquisite detail and there are some awesome tuts and posts on this site and that "other" site detailing all the steps. It does take effort and attention to detail but in the larger scheme of things can be quite inexpensive and it may scratch a few other itches too
Two names that spring to mind are Greg Kellerman and Bennie Jordaan. Thrre are also a few othes kn Facebook. Check out salt spinning pages etc
All you need initially is a good quality original to start with.

Thanx guys, now I know!
