Title: Casting distance when spinning
Post by: GT on February 05, 2015, 09:01:56 PM
Hi all.

Just wondering. What's the average distance when casting a 42g lure with an 11 foot rod and a 5000 size reel using  30 lb braid.

Secondly, how much of a difference would 25lb braid make in casting distance as opposed to 30 lb

And finally, are there any techniques one could use to improve casting distance when spinning.

Ps. I do understand that the casting distance would depend largely on the type and shape ect of the lure. Lets just say we are using a solid bullet type lure

GT  , not sure on average distances , but more or less in the 80 to 100 m mark , a lot depends on the rod used though and type of guides , the  latest technoligy rods will give vast improvements as well in getting better distance , the difference between 25 and 30 lb braid is not much , but the type of braid used will get better distance. also how the braid is laying on the spool , eg longcast spools with a slight taper also give that extra couple of meters .

Thanks Mike. Let's see what the other pros and dedicated spinner men have to add to that

Forgot to add , very important is to have some protection on the finger/thumb that the braid is held back with before the release , as this will allow you to really give a solid cast without holding back knowing that your finger /thumb is not going to travel the 80 odd meters with the 42 gram lure .. :-)  , a slightly longer drop on the braid from tip of rod to lure will also help in achieving some distance and been a spinning rod with a longer butt use that extra length / leverage to its maximum .

No problem at all there are some really dedicated spinner men on U.A and   guys that customise rods to there full potential , im sure there will   be plenty replys on this post .

Thanks again Mike for your invaluable contribution. Much appreciated.

"Using the extra length of the extended butt" Could you just unpack that a little for me please . How should one be holding the rod (hand placement )

Another important thing is to pair the spoon to the rod. A spoon that is to light or heavy will not go as far. What I have found is if a rod is rated 3oz, then generally it casts best using a 2oz spoon. Also for my type of spinning(Garrick and Kob) I do not need heavier than 15lb. The 15lb braid can handle some serious fish, my best to date is a spotted gulley of 18kg on it.....but my friend Boeps have caught one of 27kg's on a similar outfit.
So do not be afraid of scaling down on the braid, you can pull very hard on it. Typical casting distance would be 80m to a 100m like Mike Pike said, if you were using bullets then you can hammer it over the 100m mark.
I prefer my S-Bend spoons, they personally work better for me for my targeted species.

What braid do you use WJ?

Fireline 10lb and Gatorbraid 15lb. Have to admit, in the beginning I was hesitant with the Gator. But it has proven itself, have had it on the reel for just over 2 years....still strong as nails. No need to comment on Fireline, we all know it is great.

I have fireline 14lb but it has become a bit fuzzy. I'll try the rovex next.

To add onto this, I have found that the back timing of the cast is also crucial in obtaining distance, especially with a longer drop/ leader. With effective timing the lure/ spoon will fly straight and you will gain a lot of distance, if the timing is off, the lure will wobble and sacrifice distance.

Thanks Dewald  for those great tips. I'm currently using the Assassin  Sierra 330H.
It's 11 ft. How long should the drop be if one is opting for a longer drop ?

Hi GT,

I use the Excller 10ft and keep my leader to maximum 1.5 meters. The casting style is then similar to using a longer rod with a multiplier, swinging the lure backwards at an angle behind your back, waiting for it to almost reach the top of the swing and then casting. Go and try it out, cast cast cast, and find something that works for you - the most important thing is to find that sweet spot that makes the spoon fly with no wobble...

I think Reefman had a tutorial on casting, in that post there is a video of Wesley Rapson casting, check out that video!

Hi Dewald

Exactly the type of info I was looking for. :+ cred: to you brother.
I have checked out those brilliant videos in the casting section but wasn't sure if the same applied to a spinning setup. Going to give it a bash ASAP

100 -110 m is consistently possible with the Sierra with 45 g spoons designed for long casting. Anything above that is a bonus and happens under certain conditions and with perfect timing. Atmospheric conditions play a huge role here in Durban. On that really stuffy humid mornings my casting distance is definitely less than on crisp cool mornings. My drop is in the range of 1.5 m. Distance is also not the alpha and the omega. Getting the right action out of the long distance casting spoons is equally important.

100% correct Riekert!
With regard to gaining distance, as in conventional tackle, many of the same principals apply:
Good casting braid
Timing timing timing
It is as much about the back pull as the forward push
Follow your braid in the cast with your rod
Throw it like you want to break it (pretty much all of the popular 11ft spinners on the market can handle a 42/45g spoon with as much fury as we can muster)
Timing timing timing again (remember there are three major factors timing affects, power generation - trajectory - lure stability)
