Title: A Quick Transkei Trip
Post by: WJ on February 03, 2015, 01:26:38 PM
It is very seldom that you get the chance to fish some of the secluded rivers in the Transkei. The abundance of live in these rivers reminds you of the old camp stories you here from the balies....those that start with "The good ol'days".
Well last week me and a couple of mates got the opportunity, needless to say we were very excited. New lures, reels and rods were bought very quickly....not that they were needed, but it is an excuse to get some new tackle out of the missus.....lol
Wednesday night the packing started, and did we pack. We took everything, this is what you call FOMO

Thursday we hit the road. 2 bakkies and 2 boats. One thing you can say about the transkie is the gravel roads are terrible.....but well worth the sights that you see

We are very blessed to have estuaries still like this, it is secluded and untouched. And it will hopefully stay that way. We spent 3 days on the river and caught well over 60 fish, if we landed all the ones we hooked we would have got 3 times as much. The best lures were the zombie z killer, flutterstick and rapala x rap subwalk. In total 8 species were caught of which every single fish was released....except the one livey that was put out and gobbled up by a small Zambezi....lol

Best time of year is late January till mid March ( the dry season), as this time of the year the rivers are generally clean. That said we got washed away on the final day, if it was not for the one okes sooped up 4.5l V8 Cruiser we would have never got out. As for rivers....all the estuaries from Mthata river towards Port Shepstone have these fish. Look for them on google earth, then start asking around. Next year we are doing a different river. Give yourself at least a week on these rivers, on our last day we got 40 fish. It takes time to get to know them. As for the exact location of this river....you will have to buy me a beer first :frid Next year I will let you know Lenny, then you can come with.

They were there, but we only managed to land 3. They are so difficult to get out.....poormans tarpon for sure. Was good to see them in big shoals and to see the size of some of the fish.

Very good river that, not many want to disclose the name as there is a tendency for people to commercialise them. Nearby bay named similar to a famous singer..I have fished that river and it really produces. A friend was there a week ago and picked up a local that had a 17kg GT he caught at the mouth.

I can imagine, I tried the mouth but the surge was huge. Some beautiful structure though. Next year I will be there.

The other blind river is tiny and under fished, but produces really lovely kob . The road to and from the river is daunting and not for those who have fancy  vehicles without clearance, especially with rain.

We tried there as well. The water level has dropped by a lot, it is more like a puddle now. Still saw a big chase and managed to get a a quick on off with a bream.
