What you can expect, a place where you rather take your gf to:
-
spent a week at alpine heath in january so took some time to scout the area. spent another weekend in the area 2 weeks ago, and didnt even bother taking my rods. if you looking for trout, dont bother. the only two advertised venues will disappoint. rugged glen is deserted, and the dam is overgrown. free access to poachers, and probably hasnt been stocked in years. royal natal is just as disappointing. think footloose with less fish but better scenery.
your best bet is sterkies, but you have to go up oliviers pass, so not your "hour of fishing" trip.
the other option is the little river close to the resort. it is the last little bridge you pass before you get to montusi. small river has but has a healthy population of scalies. the river is gin clear at the moment, so fishing will not be easy. with a 3w and small flies, take a walk from the bridge downriver. there is a weir a few hundred meters down, some deeper pools below the weir. the fish are on the small side, so dont expect too much. have fun.

Kallie, check out the Berg areas, some are open for fishing in winter.

I gave the lodge a call . They have 2 dams that are stocked every other week . 80 % Rainbow and 20 % Brown . They assured me that someone with my good looks , personality and charisma should catch plenty !!!!! See attched pic . Nice looking dam with lekker jetty .
Gnomes , your Aunty in Chatsworth’s seconds cousins left foot on a Nan bread :crzy

Craig, just use standard winter tactics. My recommendation would be intermediate line with a 2 fly NZ rig. Big fly like a woolly bugger/pappa roach to attract attention and something like a small size 16 PTN or flashback nymph on the point to get a take. Fish close to the weeds or grass or whatever structure is available. Take note of what goggas hatch for the evening and morning rise and match the flies accordingly, more than likely take some mayfly dries and nymphs. Never underestimate a DDD on stocked waters, even a dry and dropper on said DDD should produce. Maybe even some orange flies for this time of the year. My zim 2 dollars worth. :tite
