Title: Ultimate guide to fishing spots from Kleinbrak to Gouritz...
Post by: Lofty on May 20, 2014, 01:05:26 AM
Hi  :ult: ,these are some spots that I've fished at and some info, tips and stories of where certain spots are and what to target there. As you all know, there are many other factors that also effect a spot or stretch of coast that will not be covered in this thread...I want to keep it as simple as possible without boring you,so I'm not always going to mention baits as you should know these,so hope you enjoy... w;k

Kleinbrak:
About a km to the left of the rivermouth, you should find a gravel parking area as shown in the picture, here you'll find a hole(1)and a gutter(2),that stays more or less the same for most of the year. Here you can target Leeries and Kob on live Mullet and Elf on fleshy baits.Between these spots you can target Grunter,Steenbras and the odd Musselcracker, you will often get big Barble on the fleshy baits,if they become too much of a nuisance while fishing for Kob you could fillet one, just remove the slimy skin and watch out for those spikes...

Kleinbrakriver:

Spinning, dropshot and paddletails works well at this river.
1: the train bridge,on the mouth side when there are less sandbanks you can target small Leeries and various other small fish like Stumpnose,Blacktail and Karanteen(Strepies)between the structure,we caught a good sized Grunter on a live Mullet here one evening...the Mullet probably died first :hehe:
2: N2 side of the trainbridge, here you can cast onto the mudflat at no.3 at high-tide for Grunters, some mudprawns can be pumped here,or right around to the other side at no.4 also big Grunter and small Leeries, there's great fun to be had by the youngsters at this river on light tackle... :clwn
4: when the sandbank allows it,you can target all of the above mentioned fish,a friend even caught a juvenile Bronzie here(7kg)
5: cast into the river or on the mudflats for Grunters,Leeries and the odd Kob...
6: old pumpstation, deeper water where you can target Kob from 4-15kg,Grunters and small Leeries.
7: deep hole(+-6m) where Kob and Leeries can be targeted close to bridges' pillars,Grunter here too...
8: between the 2 bridges is a spot where you can park your vehicle, you tend to get snagged up quite often here though.Rather do some spinning, just be carefull if using lipped lures as it could become costly, also gotta watch the water as you usually drive through the river at low-tide when it's dry,you can get trapped on spring tides unless you've got a 4x4...
9: another nice hole where some good Grunter,Kob and Leeries can be caught.
10: just a spot where I get Mullets, when they are scarce this will be my go to place with some chum.
11: as the name suggests, you can get mudprawns here too, targets:Grunter on the flats and Kob on the drop-offs.

12:This spot is mostly for boats, you should see a tyre on the bank close to this spot, deep hole for Kob and Leerie,Grunters on the mudflats...
13:much the same as 12...

Passie se gat:
If you're up for a bit of a walk, then this is a good place to fish, gotta cross the trainbridge from Kleinbrak side or park at Hartenbosriver. Here you can target Bronze bream,Cracker,Galjoen,Blacktail and Steenbras on the banks,if you're coming from Hartenbos use a beach trolley if you're not fit enough...
:hehe:

(http://i1280.photobucket.com/albums/a482/nhanekom77/Passiesegat_zpse3b81a38.jpg)Hartenbos river:
Between Passie se gat and the mouth you can look for nice working water and some scattered reef for Bream,Blacktail and Steenbras and at night some Elf and Kob...
At the mouth itself you can try for Leeries with mullet and for the shark brigade, good luck stopping some of these nunu's(saw a guy once that seemed dressed more for kite-surfing with wetsuit,kidney-belt and plenty straps keeping him in contact with his rod, after 900m the fish hadn't slowed or turned... straight stick, locked drag)
At the reefs,red-bait,Armadillo and Octopus can be sourced on spring low,and reef-fish are the target species...

Benekes klip:
This place can deliver epic catches or epic blanks, target Cracker here(octopus, swimming & red crab),we have also found Elf here early evenings and Blacktail during the day, cast towards the rock, some big Cracker have been caught here...the parking you'll see to the left of pic. and there's another alley to park at +-100m towards Hartenbos between the houses...

Die pyp(Bayview):
Between the righthand marker and the pipe you can target Leeries,Steenbras and Bellman early morning and late afternoon.Elf and Kob at night, some Blacktail and Stumpies at the pipe too during the day,I've caught some Leeries between these markers too...

Dias beach:
Here you can target Leeries,Sharks,Bellman,Steenbras.Elf and Kob at night,we even got small Hammerheads(5-10kg)one evening, quite a bit of light on the beach here at night which seems to attract the Elf...

Dias corner:
I've only fished here once, but i'm itching to get back here as I lost a big Steenbras here on pinkprawns when the hook pulled(felt like I hooked the train on the nearby tracks)Also rather fish 2/3 guys here as the robbers live just up the hill on the right...there have been robberies along this coast...
(bat

Haaibankies:
As the name says,Sharks from these reefs, some Leeries and big Elf here too...a well known "old salt" told me he lost his p/b blue Elf here(estimated at 10-11kg's,right by his feet... )I also heard that the locals caught most of their big reef-fish here years ago...

De Bakke:
Here you can source some red-bait and sand bait, the usual reef species to be targetted here, big Kollies and Wildeperd(Zebra).I'm sure Crackers patrole these little bays too,as bait is plentifull(Oysters,Perlemoen,Occy,Crabs,Allikreukel and red & sand bait). Also some Armidillo, that's also on mr.crackers' menu.

Santos beach:
never really fished here, apparently not allowed as it's a bathers' beach and close to MBYSC.At night and early evening when the beachgoers have left Elf and Leeries can be targetted. Some small Mackerel too,not really a well known spot to fish  at,but nice for the kiddies with light tackle, never really much swell here either...

Skurwe bankies:
Here one can target nice Leeries(6-14kg)and if really lucky Yellowtail on livies or spoons. You can catch livies like Mullet,Karranteen,Kollies and Gorries here, guys slide from this block for Sharks and Rays too..
As the name suggests, you can get reef-fish here like Galjoen,Kollies,Red-Roman and Zebra.

The Point:
At punt klip(as I know it)I've seen some big Crackers landed, your usual reefspecies too. You'll lose a LOT of lead here.I don't fish here often, but heard that when standing on this rock, one should cast more towards 13-15:00 if visualising a clock, rather than 8/9 o'clock towards the tidal pool, heard some Yellow-tail came out here before too...

Kranse(mountain)onkruid:
Here you can expect quite a dangerous climb and walk, pack only essentials like water, sinkers, nylon, hooks etc.Good rock-shoes are essential.Big Crackers and Poensies can be expected here, along with Jan bruin,Roman,Galjoen,Bronze Bream and for the in-ed fishermen some big sharks and rays too... :shrk:

Oesterbaai or Grootkloof at Pinnacle point:
This is a good spot for Crackers and other reef fish, big Leeries,Elf and Kob too.Livebait like Mullets,Blacktail and Karranteen can be caught here with a small rod or a cast-net...redbait and crabs can be collected here too.

Danabay(1st beach):
1:Walk to the left from the parking area to where the beach ends, then climb up onto the rocks, here you can expect Steenbras,Leeries,Kob and Elf,lots of Mullets at times...
2:Steenbras,Cracker,Galljoen,Blacktail
3:Blacktail at the rock close by(we use pilchard intestines on 1/0 hooks, caught p/b here, bigger than a steeringwheel and dot almost gone easily over 40cm... :shk :blktl: :hehe: good fun on 8/9" rods and grinders, kids love it too...
4:Usually Steenies,I always use wire grapnels at Danabay,as currents are usually strong...
5:climb onto this rock and fish for Steenies too...
6:mostly reef-fish as you're casting into the rocks,Galjoen and Crackers.
7:same as above...

8:die pyp:here, depending on the structure and formation(changes drastically, sometimes you'll cast into bricks, next week sandbank),you can target cracker, steenies or perhaps kob,elf and leeries on the sandbank... :hnthnt:
9:there should be a facebrick house with 2 large, seafacing arches right behind you, cast inbetween the 2 rocky outcrops(steenies longer cast, reef fish closer in)
10:long reef running straight into the ocean(can catch swimming crabs to the left here at low...watch-out,they don't play nice)best way to catch them is to chum(onionbag)tied to your leg and let the swells wash it around, you've gotta be quick, but easier to let them reverse back into the sand slightly and then grab body and pinchers all together, make sure you hold its pinchers tightly against its body...you've been warned(perhaps use welding/gardening gloves if still a novice) :creep: :hehe:
11:there's a lone rock in the water,I'd say 50-60m in,sometimes submerged under sand, but when washed open attracts gallies,to its young/small blackmussels...

12:deeper water here(caught a small bronzie here once on kob bait),reef fish and kob
13:there's usually a nice gulley running parallel to the beach with a sandbank behind that,I've had some nice pulls on prawns that didn't result in a hook-up... :dunno:

2nd beach(Danabay):
left of parking look for a sandbank for steenies or gulley/rip for kob.
the reefs holds gallies,blacktail etc.

Danabay 3rd beach:
If you feel like a walk, then this is also a productive area, with reefs and sand,so you have many options there, sometimes the Bellman are wild up that way...

Boggomsbay:
Probably one of my favourite destinations, simply because of its diversity, the sharky people can have fun here, but for me anywhere there's good formation is worth a go,be it leeries, galjoen, bellman, kollies, grunter or stumpnose during the day or nice kob at night, the spot on the left is where we've caught most species, with the best probably being a 4.8,a 4.5,a 3.2 and a 2,8kg gallie on one day, over and above the grunter and bellman,(when fishing musselworm). At these rocks these swimming crabs(sandkrappe) can be caught too...it's perhaps better to bring livies along from M.bay as searching for them here can be hard and very wet work but nice to see leeries chasing all around you while stalking with the net...but it's tiring to carry a 20l bucket for 2 hrs while hunting... :creep:

Vleesbay:I personally don't have any experience fishing here, but do know that not so lonng ago a couple of leeries and kob came out here,I've also heard that "swembatjie"produces some fish... :dunno:

Fransmanshoek(die saal):
this is one of the better known spots around here, well known for it's BIG sharks,BIG kob, crackers and leeries to name a few....you can spin for leeries or use live-bait caught there,to target them close to the rocks,no need to slide for them...just be very surefooted when going there as it can get dangerous very quickly here, ecspecially when everyone and his brother gets the fever and hooks and sinkers start whizzing past your ears, and there's only so much space up there,I find it better to go during the week or if too busy try the outcrops to the left.If you're going to gaff anything, please use a long gaff and don't take chances with shorter gaffs,no fish is worth your life...

Malbaai:
this bay is directly behind die Saal, rugged area too, with reefspecies being your target, watch the water here, can get rough...

Fonteintjies:
it's a bit of a walk to get there but is a very productive spot, here you can target galjoen and cracker between the bricks or move to the sand on your right and target bellman and grunter, perhaps steenies too...kog aswell further down the beach.

Kanon beach:
target anything from kob and elf(spot 1) between the scattered reef and sand,to cracker and gallies of the reefs(spot 2)...octopus works well here for kob and crackers...there used to be a lot of allikreukil here, other baits also available.

Kanon rocks:
target species will be BIG crackers, galjoen and the rest of the reef dwellers,I've seen molers from crackers in rockpools here that were as big as R5 coins... :shk the locals look out for fisherman who have long brutal battles with CRACKERS here, and if broken off or reefed, they patrole the coast for a couple of days waiting for the fish that sometimes get washed ashore after dying from exhaustion...never seen that, but can almost believe that...it's  :craz: could maby be Poensies too... :dunno: I stand to be corrected but I believe that the S,A, record kob was caught on this strech of coast towards Gouritz mouth(76,09kg)...some blue elf swimming around here too,6-9kg  :shd: :Like:

Gouritzriver mouth:
It's a bit of a walk from Kanon rocks' parking,to spot x,but if you're allowed to cross Oom Jannies' property,it could hold a p/b kob or elf, fished there before, but only caught a sandy a bronzie and a "don't know",it dropped the live-bait,but the bait came back with trademark kob puncture wounds... .A slide can be sent out from the parking area on the left of the pic. for kob and blue elf, last time there, something clipped both my hooks, changed to light steeltrace and nothing... (bat my friends dad went tight too on a biggish kollie, but the damn sinker got snagged,he stood with it headshaking for a long time but eventually the line parted...eish,only a kob has a mouth big enough to swollow that bait... :-(
anyway, enough sad stories for now, fishing off the beach next to the mouth also produces nice catches of kob,elf and cracker where there's a rocky bottom...
for some spinning try the sandbanks in the river or put a livey on the drop-off,leeries,elf and kob.

the river:
for some lighter fun, grunter and small steenies can be caught at the fence,witkopklippe(7m hole) and vinknes(boat),even steentjie se gat close to shore if you have a boat to cross with(not allowed to moore the boat across the river, unless maby to get mudprawns or mullets).Kob and leeries can be caught at 1 & 2,steentjie se gat(8m deap)and at witkopklippe,I won't suggest fishing liveys with light tackle as numerous 100lb kob and BIG blue elf are caught in this river, octopus leg is also deadly for the big kob...same friends' dad caught a 47kg kob at the low-waterbridge that crosses the river on mullet fillet...

That's enough for now,I'm tired, hope it has been of help to most of you...the remainder tomorrow...if anyone reading this has anything to add to this, please, feel free to add to it... w;k  lloooonnnggg topic... :shk  this galjoen was caught at the Danabay 1st beach spot in front of the parkinglot...spot 11,first cast, pink prawn

Nice one Lofty! I just love the Kanon rocks! My favorite scratching ground. As for the kranse, been there once with Bergievisserman and it was awesome. Very steep and dangerous area and testing my old legs but will go back there sometime.

(I can't see the pics though. I think it is because "photobucket" is blocked by our company. Strange enough I can see the last pic with the gallie.)

Charles if you have a look at the pics, the last one was "attached" - it has  nicky cell 169 (Small) (Medium).jpg (http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=17533.0;attach=121041) (103.42 kB, 1000x750 - viewed 0 times.) below it. That means the pic is hosted on Ultimate. All the other pics are hosted on Photobucket, which is being blocked by your IT guys...

Hi,guys,I'm glad that you enjoyed this.@ Charles,it's a pity you can't see the pics, because threads are always better when one can actually see what/where/how,but at least you can see it when back home again.
I didn't realise how long it would take and how much work this type of thing would be,from searching google earth for pics and marking them,to typing and organising, then edit, resize and modify(in my case). It was satisfying to see the final product and to know that people will get enjoyment out of it. w;k
@ Spieks, yes Glentana has many nice spots, look up the place on Google earth, you'll see all the sandbanks and gulleys, the water is also quite strong there, similar to Danabay.Look up Bothastrand,Reebok and Grootbrak too, beautifull coastline with many options...Happy :fshn:

There are many little gems one can still discover over and above the spots I mentioned here, the rest of the thread is coming,Gouritz coast... :hnthnt:
I probably don't have to remind :ult: s' members, but guys please keep our coastline clean, even if it's not your own rubbish,if you can manage to carry it to a bin it will help tremendously... :clwn

@Marthin,i like the way you think... :hehe: our crackers are brutal brawlers...not to be messed with, you might end up going home with your tail between your legs... w;k

Marthin dunno what you are talking about....I grew up in that area and those fish have never come close to breaking any of my reels. And I only use  :dwa: .
Lofty once again great post. You have covered most of the fishable areas in your post. Nice thing about the areas at Gouritz, Kanon, Boggoms, Vleesbaai and Danabay is it is safe to fish alone at night. The one place I would not fish alone at night is The Pipe at Hartenbos. Lots of "messtekers" there in the bush. Hartenbos, Kleinbrak and Grootbrak is safe generally......but keep an eye on the guys walking on the beach. There have been incidents at these places in the past

I didn't realise how long it would take and how much work this type of thing would be,from searching google earth for pics and marking them,to typing and organising, then edit, resize and modify(in my case). It was satisfying to see the final product and to know that people will get enjoyment out of it. w;k

Hahaha... welcome to the club! Now you know how much work goes into the tuts on Ultimate... okes don't realize how much pain and suffering goes into a good photo tutorial... 'strue ja.
Nice work Lofty, appreciate it dude.

O.k.,there are a few places along our coast where you can relax, fish, swim and have a braai all at the same place..one of those is the Pine lake marina at Sedgefield where you can fish in the Swartvlei lagoon for grunter, kob and leeries from the comfort of a well kept lawn with braai's,swimmingpool etc. look here http://www.pinelakemarina.co.za/fishing.aspx (http://www.pinelakemarina.co.za/fishing.aspx) and here http://www.riverside-resort.co.za/ (http://www.riverside-resort.co.za/) or for some birding, canoeing etc.perhaps try Ebb and flow Wilderness.Besides lagoon fishing there are some great beaches like at Wilderness to fish from...

right, let me see... :hnthnt: Leentjiesklip-Kleinkranz-target species are:Kob-(Livebait from the Keimansriver or Wilderness lagoon),chokka, pilchard, pink prawn-Shad(Elf)-fleshy baits and Steenbras-mud/pinkprawn/chokka/bloodworm.White musselcracker closer to Rooibankies, where you'll get more rocks, scattered reef/sandy bottom, red crab,red-bait and sand crab(watch out for those sharp pinchers  :hehe: )this is a lovely stretch of beach with a lot of good structure, sandbanks and gulleys..the coast from Haroldsbay,Vicbay to Keimans is/can be very dangerous so I would not suggest taking your boy there, very rocky and deep water...

no,I haven't sorry, but have been there,I think that 7?kg(think 74kg)kob that Shawn Mey caught a while ago was caught near there(on Cola beach,I think between Gericke's and Swartvleiriver mouth)on octopus leg.I see on my Google earth it's called Lions head... :dunno: same place I think...

Lions head is the top part of Gerickes point it seems,so it is the same place,I know it's a rocky area with deep water so I suppose reef species such as musselcracker, galjoen, poensie, elf, red roman and sharks if that's your thing...like most of these South facing points, you have to be very carefull as it can get very dangerous very quickly with water rushing over rocks all of a sudden... :shk it's probably safer further to the West of Gericke's toward Gonna's and Kleinkranz where most reefspecies can be targetted, but it's a stiff walk... :creep:

Be very careful of Voelklip, it is a dangerous place. I think it was Defenition that said on another inferior forum that the sea bottom has changed and it is now even more dangerous to fish there. I would give it a miss as Def is a pretty adventurous fisherman and if he says a place is dangerous I believe him.

Yes,as I mentioned, extreme care must be taken at some of these spots, rather stand and watch what the ocean does for half an hour before deciding what to do,if you feel it's safe enough then wait another 10min. and just observe the swells. Many fisherman never returned home from fishing these places. There are much safer and productive places than to go and risk it all for a fish...I would definately not take any kids to these places... be safe out there... :-)

Hi one week to go!
Next week Friday I am in the Southern Cape.

By Sunday I am at Gourikwa.

I am mostly drawn to the Gouritz river because I know river fishing the best.

Hopefully I can organise one deep sea trip and one cracker from the side.

A nice elf off the rocks, and imagine a steam train in the river.

Attached is where I will be staying at H20 in Gourikwa

:gljn: :gljn: Season closed, sexy time for them now.. :shd: :shd: :shd: :shd: Open season!

Looks like cracker country there, enjoy mate..any of those reefs should hold fish you'll have to scratch around and get a feel for the tides and reefs. Water really warm there now and warmer water offshore so you would want some easts to kick life into the water in that part of the world. Good luck. Find some sand for the steamers and put out a bait that would entice a range of species including Mr. cracker..Leave the big mamma's to go back swimming, for the locals and you to catch again next year. Should be bronze bream aplenty there but there also remember that they are second only to the blacktail and black steenbras in terms of slow growth rates and pair for life and can live a half a century. So keep the inbetween size for the braai and you'll ensure more for the future. Very good reports of cob from that coast too with the warm water, just also there remember the stock is collapsed and still being nailed so small ones back, extra large ones too, and stick to limits and we'll have more for the future.

With that 20plus degree water offshore, I'd throw a small tin spoon too off any point for bonnies/katonkel, leeries might be too lastig to target with the warm water and blue shad gone with the cooler water, but small shad should fill those foamy gullies with that beautiful but sterile water (lower oxygen) around and you'll pick them up spinning in the foam early morning and late evening or when the tide pushes or drains over a foamy ledge or shelf with gullies in it.. looks like paradise there, nothing to do but fish.

What....another 'inferior' forum....which has over 40,000 members and +96 thousand topics with 1,292,408 posts

 :crzy :crzy

:craz:  some misconceptions here....but back to the topic of this thread....

Die Leertjie is a good cracker and galjoen spot and bigger kob are also caught. As with all our R/S spots on the Garden Route, the larger breeding fish have already been somewhat decimated, leaving only juvenile fish.

Kranse includes Voelklip which is east of Leertjie ~ a rocky point which has claimed the lives of many fisherfolk. Be very wary and careful of this slippery rock and what it holds, if you decide to fish it. A large cross on the hill top marks the spot where many souls have been swept away by the sea.
Kranse continues to the Gwaing river mouth and Vic Bay area ~ all are dangerous bays with step cliff sides and difficult slippery access, delivering large Galjoen in the winter months.

Forward of Gerickes point is deepwater with submerged rocks. Cracker and kob can be found as well as roman and the usual Kollies. Galjoen of course. Dangerous to fish on a bigger sea as the water rises unexpectedly and will wash you off the higher rocks easily.
West of Gerickes toward Kleinkrantz beach is a rocky shelves interspersed with sandy beaches with banks and gutters. Most renowned 'Gonnas' and 'Diep Draai' ~ which deliver steenbras/kob/zebra/kolstert/galjoen/cracker/hounds & spotted gulley sharks.
Further west from Kleinkrantz on the beaches at Sandhoogte and Wilderness will give you Rags and Spotties. If conditions are right you will find Bellman, kob & cracker.

Southern Cape is  :shmno:  country!

You don't have to knock one down to lift yourself up. The real truth of the matter is that most of the real pros don't hang out on fishing forums, and compared to them we are all clueless kooks (Reefs, JohnF, Captain Hook excluded of course). Most here are binnelandse clueless kooks..But anyway.. I used to be a binnelandse clueless kook, now I'm just a kook with a little bit of a clue. That's why I try help a little, I realize how little I knew and how little I still know compared to those who will never grace these halls and who've been doing this successfully for generations.. Those that would never be here, have been showing me what is up the last few years and I can safely say my catch rate is a few hundred percent higher than what is was, I am not left wanting when it comes to seafood. If everyone had the knowledge that these folks had, but did not have the conservation ethic they have, the sea would be empty. But you don't find them around these parts, they are too busy fishing.

There is action and stuff that goes down in our little fishing world, action that will blow the average mans brains' and scar them for life, change their destiny...but if you looked online, it's like it never existed. At all. Spots seemingly have not caught a fish in years and techniques have never seen the light of day. Just sayin..if one drops the attitude, people start to share their nuggets.

Latest reports from that side, water really warm and clear..Katonkel are absolutely full-up, couple cob around, leeries lastig. I feel vindicated haha..

I think throwing a spoon into some deepwater on light spinning gear when the bonnies are abouts, must be one of my favorite pastimes.. If they are around, you find a spot to reach them and you have them dialed in you can those little speedsters nailing you throw for throw.. as much fun as a grown man can have with his clothes still on!

It's confusing...

Katonkel in the Cape is the Atlantic Bonito or Sarda sarda.

Katonkel in KZN is the King Mackerel or Couta.

Title: Re: Ultimate guide to fishing spots from Kleinbrak to Gouritz...

When the water is too warm, the leervis will chase out of interest but not eat or commit and swim lazily, the warmer the water the less oxygen it can hold..and it makes em lazy.

katonkel, mean the cape fish, atlantic bonito, sarda sarda, but not the oceanic bonito (as i call them?) as in the struisbaai pic, although offshore they swim together but oceanic bonito doesn't go inshore to the bays whereas katonkel will fill the bays if the right water does. Great sport fish and they want a little spoon a meter under the water as fast as you can retrieve..Cast into deep water off points.

Looks just like that, although that is the sister species sarda orientalis, best pic I can get, you would not tell them apart if you caught them. Oceanic bonito, skipjack, has the stripes on the bottom and bold stripes but katonkel are on top and thinner. Also the oceanic bonito is a fatter fish like a rugby ball like a tuna and the atlantic bonito is much more slender but still fatter and rounder than a leervis or shad for example.

http://www.gma.org/fogm/Sarda_sarda.htm (http://www.gma.org/fogm/Sarda_sarda.htm)
http://www.fishbase.org/identification/SpeciesList.php?genus=Sarda (http://www.fishbase.org/identification/SpeciesList.php?genus=Sarda)
http://www.fishbase.se/summary/Sarda-sarda.html (http://www.fishbase.se/summary/Sarda-sarda.html)

Bag limit is ten, I've caught 50 in a day C&R, when they were thick before..the right spoon and the right retrieve when they are shoaling and you can get them cast for cast..those toothy critters will chase that spoon till your feet. If you are going to keep any, you have to spike the brain and bleed the fish as soon as you land it and keep cool and in the shade, otherwise they turn to mush. Then they are sharkbait and very good shark bait or dogfood, otherwise when looked after right, they are red/pink and rich flesh, make excellent sashimi, smoked fillets, braai vlekked or seared steaks.

Has anyone had any success in the Kleinbrak River lately? Had one chase by a small garrick on a Kingfisher 1.V spoon, but after that nothing else.

And is it even worth it to throw spoons and plugs at the very first spot mentioned in this post?

Hi,I went to Kleinbrak about 2 weeks ago, threw paddletails and stickbaits under the N2 bridges but saw and felt nothing... :dunno: As for the first spot, yes for sure, try bucktails, paddletails and spoons for Elf and Kob,perhaps even the odd Leerie...usual times will be the best, early morning and at sunset and even better if it coincides with the high tides..Hartenbos river mouth also giving some young Elf apparently(on bait I think)It's common knowledge that the fish go on vacation over December to hide from all the jetskis and boats from upcountry :hehe: :tite

No problem Hennie, yes unfortunately pb became a subscription service which I didn't need anymore...If you have any questions regarding the pictures I'll try find them on Google earth again...Mosselbay and surrounds is still my favourite fishing grounds...hoping to go visit my dad over new year and to fish that coast again.. :rck"
p.s:to change Cred you have to actually click on the 'thumbs up' icon under the members' name... :hnthnt: w;k

Unfortunately I've lost all of those images... sry You can see the spots on Google earth,Just type in 'Kleinbrak river' which is where the thread started,if you compare to the fuzzy pictures you should be able to see the spots...then just follow the coast all the way to Danabaai,Boggomsbaai and finally Gouritzriver...Please ask if there's something specific you wanna know... :corrct: Danabaai is a very good fishing area, water usually strong, but all 3 beaches produce fish in the right conditions...you're a lucky man to go retire there, you'll enjoy the Garden route.. :tite

HI, Guys, I am new to this forum. Thanks for the detailed information regarding the area. I might be heading up that way in a few weeks and hopefully not just feed the fish!

Die pyp(Bayview):

Danabay(1st beach):

:dunno:

2nd beach(Danabay):
left of parking look for a sandbank for steenies or gulley/rip for kob.
the reefs holds gallies,blacktail etc.

:dunno:

Fransmanshoek(die saal):
this is one of the better known spots around here, well known for it's BIG sharks,BIG kob, crackers and leeries to name a few....you can spin for leeries or use live-bait caught there,to target them close to the rocks,no need to slide for them...just be very surefooted when going there as it can get dangerous very quickly here, ecspecially when everyone and his brother gets the fever and hooks and sinkers start whizzing past your ears, and there's only so much space up there,I find it better to go during the week or if too busy try the outcrops to the left.If you're going to gaff anything, please use a long gaff and don't take chances with shorter gaffs,no fish is worth your life...

Malbaai:
this bay is directly behind die Saal, rugged area too, with reefspecies being your target, watch the water here, can get rough...
