From early in February this year we have been mostly fishing estuarine environments (particularly Durban Bay) with light rods of 6-8, 2500 size reels, and Braid/Nanofil rated anywhere between 6 and 15lb in breaking strain. The catch rate per outing has been pretty outstanding and we have become spoiled in that if two of us do not land at least 8 fish between ourselves in a couple of hours on the water we feel a tad miff and call it a slow morning. A lot has also been learned of climatic conditions above, and temperature, structure and current influences beneath the surface, and what effect they have on the different species and fishing in general.
The variety of species we have caught has been pretty decent, and in an outing it has not been uncommon for us to get up to 6 different kinds on lure. There are still summer species around, but it is becoming harder and harder to get them to commit as the weeks go by, so we thought we would share some of the awesome little devices that have given us so much pleasure over the last few months.
What follows are some of our favourite lures and those that have been successful in enticing a bite, with a list of the species we have managed to catch and release on each.

!
There are different methods we will begin employing over the winter period, but there are signs that it is also going to be exciting on the artificial front with Garrick and Kob appearing in recent weeks, and Snoek also teasing with their half-takes and some exciting on-offs. We hope to report being able to boat and release some more winter species soon!
Please remember to fish for the future and release everything that is healthy enough to swim away so we can get harder pulls more often in the years to come!

Sorry dudes, the formatting on the original doc has obviously caused some issues when copied and pasted, but its all there!

Great info and congrats on your fishing achievements!

(clap) ... great stuff jball7204 , a variety of species on some interesting artificials and some great info :win: .
-
:tkx: for all the great info, eventhough I don't fish KZN these lures should work well here in the Southern Cape rivers, some interesting lures you've got there... :hnthnt: I feel a bout of T.A. brewing... have some :+ cred: for the effort of posting and sharing... (clap)
-
Thanks for sharing. Really enjoyed reading this.

Hey Lofty, just be careful with the "walking" lures and stickbaits. If the action is correct even the birds go for it. I got a Garrick one day on one and the very next morning a gull took the same lure from me. Was sure he dropped it on the water, but couldn't find it when we checked...
Rapala's are not cheap....

Lekka report :+ cred:
What are the most productive areas, Bayhead groves always works well and there are plenty bigeye around the wharfs - whereelse?? :-)
-
Nice jball!! Great article...! Post some of the fish pics too! :+ cred:
-
Thanks for the help with it Reefz, I'll ask my partner in crime to do one of the fish and the environs we got them in, as he has all the pics stored properly. My previous phone went for a swim so I lost all the ones I had.
Dugongboy, the steep deep dropoffs are good for the kingies (wharfsides etc.) For some reason the bluefin like the yacht mole area too and Chris Quinton got a nice one there and some spectacular burnoffs - all from the side. The pickhandle are also in the same areas as the bigeyes but have been scarce recently and replaced by small garfish and torpedo scad. The GT's and Garrick were feeding rather aggresively over shallow muddy banks near mangroves - not over sand.

Fantastic info jball I have been waiting for this kind of report for a while, cool to see all the lures that work too. My Mias fishing list just got bigger  :+ cred:

Hell great post! This is what us newbies to spinning need! Thanx :appr:
-
No worries!
-
Thanks for this jball! Was all this off a boat or on the side?
-
Hi Shivaan, mostly off a boat. Only the Yacht Mole produced from the side.
-
Thanks jball. Is it on the side opposite cafe fish. Across the carpark?

Thank you :-)
-
we did catch from the side around pelican island.
but, its not very accessible, and not really safe.
the area around Wilsons can also be productive, but we just dont really fish there.
we cannot wait for summer. been a cold dry spell, and the garrick havent really featured as expected. (YET....... we hope)
-
Yeah, come on summer!

Thats thoughful of you to leave some for us lol! :crzy
I got some from them not long ago for +-R65....

Up in Joburg they are slightly more expensive
-
I think they more expensive in Jhb because they have to be heavier as you guys have to cast further to reach the sea! :crzy

That cut deep :hehe: :hehe: :hehe: , touche (clap)
-
Got me a few the other day!!
Always been a fan of the original Yozuris, when they came out they were much better than anything else.
-
Do you have any success on those shrimp lures? :dunno:
-
Gavin I have no doubt that it will work - very nice slow action with a twitch, it should be good to bounce over sandbanks in the bay - believe it or not I caught a few shad on a similar one at the Caissons when fishing for bait a few years back.
-
It looks like it should work, maybe grunter?
-
Haven't really tried the shrimp/prawn imitations, but they must work. Have a feeling gurnard will grab before grunter, unless they aren't around.
Prefer gamefish takes on the surface and we're normally kept busy by that, but have that exact same prawn lure and will be giving it a bash as soon as it warms up a little (water wise) and there is more variety to tempt with it.
-
Anyone ever use those colour change jobs? Bought a couple to try but unsure of the whole idea behind that. Cant read Japanese...!
-
great post, heres some :+ cred:
-
Guys the shrimp works very well, tried it out da last time I fished the bay,
Tried evrything I had than put on the shrimp, jus let sink near the rocks and
The Malabar Rockod never wasted time, got 5 of them and dropped a
Rock Salmon, all small fish but still a pleasure watching them come out
Their hiding places and grabing the lure.
-
(clap) Fantastic, thanks for the feedback Randon!!! :tkx:
-
Which part of the bay Randon?
-
In May & June when the only gamefish that were biting in the Bay were the odd Torpedo Scad and Garfish we fished deep a lot as Sand Gurnards can be quite fun (for a limited time). Picked up plenty Malabar on the banks while pulling the lures off the banks into deeper water. They even chowed a Salty Blade! I think my mate Chris got 3 of them in quick succession with a Salty Blade. It happened after I wrote the article so it wasn't in there.
But just for info, the Salty Blade got Rock Cod and Gurnard when jerked up off the bottom. Reasonably quick retrieve too...

Great Stuff Randon. I need to give this spot a try sometime between lectures or site meetings :hehe: . Thanks for the info. Hopefully I will be able to contribute to this thread soon...
