Arguable the easiest fish to catch on the North coast and if they around you can clap dozens on Camo worm or Sard / Chokka . But targeting them that way could get boring . How would be the best way to target them on light spinning gear ?

Lichia they love a small spoon as well......the smallest s bend you can find or the 28g Iron Candy....can catch them all day on these!

+1, although I have never targeted them (caught a few reeling in baits through the shorebreak) I watched a guy at Chidenguile catch them throw for throw on a small sprat spoon in the shorebreak, he must have caught about 20 in the short time we were on the beach.

They love a McCarthy 4" jerk shad on a 1/4oz jighead, I have had best success on the blue / silver / olive types. Have caught them on bucktail jigs and spoon (while fishing for shad). Lots of fun!

Making up some Bucktails . What colours will work best ?
Made a orange head , white , chartreuse tail .
Planning a white head with a white and olive tail as well as a white head , with a white and binne Pink tail.

Im using cheap chicky nail polish . 3 coats colours + 2 coats clear . Sits like %^$# in a blanket

i have used the same.
tip: get a UV torch and check the nail polish for uv reflection. i use those that reflect uv light.

Get yourself some Sally Hansen Hard as Nails for your clear coat - used it extensively back in my days of fly-tying to finish off saltwater flies. Relatively inexpensive and it really works!

This sounds like fun, I must try it as I have the Mc Carthy jerk shads.
Im on leave Wednesday through to Friday ..... will I catch them around Scottsburgh too?

they are there. they can be found as far down as the eastern cape during summer.
whether you will catch them...well, I hope that you do. look for a shallow sandbank where the foamies are rolling.

Always interesting to hear how anglers target different fish.
I caught one on the weekend on a 45g iron candy couta casting glow spoon.
Was actually targeting snoek on a long cast but when spoon is close to rocky ledge near the shore I like to try to "hang the spoon" in the waves as this seems to promote kingfish and shad that are hunting along the ledge to aggressively hit the spoon. I think the fish see this as their last chance to take their prey before it disappears over the edge of the ledge into water that is too shallow for them to follow. Unfortunately a number of spoons are lost to the rocks at this time.

Just as a side note, my son nails them on curly tail grubs. The same ones used for specimen angling.

Those curly tails work great for almost everything, I love those things, even caught a small Grunter on one before :geet
