Title: Spinning in George and Surrounds?
Post by: Lucky Hook on February 10, 2014, 11:12:03 AM
I am booked to spend Wednesday night (12 Feb 2014) in George as you cannot fly in from Durban and back on the same day as there is only one flight.
It appears that I will have a couple of hours free from first light on Thursday morning (weather looks okay) and was considering taking a 10ft aerocast rod (easy to travel with) Stradic 5000 loaded with 20lb braid and a couple of spoons and hard plastics - You hardly ever go wrong fitting in a fishing session!
Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to go as I have never fished this part of our coastline and also what lures should I use etc?
Also if I am wasting my time (bad local conditions forecast etc) please also advise.
Thanks in advance!

I would think your best bet is to go down to Victoria Bay and spin off the jetty. Maybe someone else have a better idea?  :dunno:

hi,LH,there are many options available...for shore spinning I'd try Wilderness beach area which is close to George, ecspecially around the river mouth area. You could go to Sedgefield too, there you have the option of spinning in the Swartvlei lagoon(there's a turn-off just across the N2 bridge,on Knysnas' side, where you'd turn left and find parking close to the traintracks, then walk along the trainbridge till you find the sandbanks)or from the shore for kob, leeries, grunter and elf,a little further(about 10-15km)there's Knysna lagoon too...
Towards Mosselbay there is the beach at Grootbrak river,I won't try the river itself...otherwise there's Kleinbrak river(about 30 km from George)where you could try the river for leeries and kob or the surf next to the mouth...as I said there are many options... :dunno:
apparently there's a 30% chance of rain on Thursday...but that's been known to be wrong... :cnfzd I'd bring a selection of paddletails, bucktails, chiselnose and needlenose plugs and perhaps a spoon or two for kob and elf,you could perhaps also use lipped lures(kob, leerie, elf)or topwater lures(leeries, elf, grunter). These are just guidelines, depending on what you're targeting, you can choose from these mentioned above... :clwn there has been some elf around but rather small and mostly at night, big leeries have also been very playfull in Gouritz(perhaps a little far to drive for you.. :dunno: )kob should still be around but gotta work for them...if it's cloudy it should be in your favour for kob if you could find some nice gullies/sandbanks with white working/rolling water as they eat better at first light or evening as the S.E. has been blowing here and the water is a bit clean/clear during the day... :hnthnt: hope this helps and :tite
p.s:don't know Vic bay as was mentioned, but could be an option too...hope you enjoy the garden routes' fishing and scenery... w;k

pic. 2:Swartvlei lagoon and the turn-off(white road)park at tracks, walk back towards George on train tracks... :hnthnt:

Great Advice Lofty and Sa fish  (clap) My two cents are such

If   you are going to fish Vic bay, walk along the railway track towards   Wilderness and just the other side of the first tunnel, you will find   Skyns klip over looking Wilderness and the Kaaimans river mouth,   remember to breath when you see the view  w;k . This place can cook with Elf and Leervis

My   all time favorite is Gerrick's point at Sedgfield, fishing off the   right hand point is off the page, but can only be done in calm   conditions, also a very long walk. As Lofty says the beach is good too.

If weather is pear shaped, train bridge on Swartvlei is excellent

Tight lines

Thnaks for all the info gents.
Unfortunately did not manage to get to fish.
Flight to George was great with approach taking us along coastline where recommended spots were clearly visible -Thanks again for details.
Will hopefully get to test your waters in the future.

pity you couldn't fish,as I mentioned in one of my original posts, they expected 30% rain for Th.day and that was true...rained a bit yesterday and today it hasn't stopped...hopefully next time you will be able to spend some more time on our coast... :fshn: :clwn
