Title: Yamaha 40 2 stroke help
Post by: Happy Dog on December 14, 2013, 09:14:13 PM
Today whilst fishing got plastic on my motor and she heated up. Buzzer went and I turned off motor. Once cooled down would not start using battery, battled to turn. Could pull start and it ran fine. When got back tried to star motor  2 turns then click. Was able to pull start. Tried the key and sounded like starter motor not working? Is this a normal. Not sure if overheating caused it? Please any advice would be great.

Hmmm HD , does'nt sound good might have a bit of heat seize between pistons, rings and cylinders... worst case scenario is a broken ring and score marks on the cylinders , what do the spark plugs look like .. ??

Hopefully theres no motor damage so check the basic stuff first.
Does the motor trim. If not check your battery cables for rot and all the terminations.
If you can pull start it the starter motor will swing it no problem.  Whats the charge on the battery like?

Hope you find the fault

Easy way to check if the motor is tight. Pull the plugs and swing it, should spin no probem. If its still wont spin the you may have nipped a ring

Start at the beginning. Make sure the battery is fully charged and terminals/connections are clean and secure.

hopefully it's not like the power head on one of my Johnsons attached, the ring gouged the bore, luckily we managed to find another power head.
As said below take the plugs out and spin the motor, if you can find a compression tester check the compression that will tell you if it is a cylinder.

It could also be 'black death' on your battery cables, also check the control linkage is it actually in neutral when you turn the key?

I am no expert on two stroke moters but any moter runs on the same prinsepels. If you can pull start it with no problem the problem should be on the starter not turning the engin quick enoth. If the engin has seesed it will turn hard with the pull start as well as the starter and an engin what has seesed normaly goes stuck or if not woll not have compretion to start with a starter or by pull start. Hope you find the problem.

Battery full, terminals clean, plugs clean. When try to start on battery sounds like car starter sticking. Pull start no problem. Two pulls and start. When run for a while one pull and starts. Runs no problem.

Nothing at all wrong with the motor if it's pull starting, sounds like a starter problem of sorts, maybe pull it off and give it a clean, brushes could be worn??

Howzit Happy Dog

I had the same problem a while ago, picked up a plastic bag, alarm went off and motor cut out. Started ok after but the next launch I couldn't start, it was like my battery was dead but I knew it was full. Took it into Alpha at Durban Yamaha and he had it fixed in 30 min. The old fuses on the 40s 2 stroke go from time to time, not so much the fuse but the fuse holder and wire, it was replaced and have never had a problem since.
Hope this is your problem because it's a quick fix.

Have you checked your battery cable's.  Sounds like rot

HD, I believe its the starter motor and or solenoid. Swop the one with the other and see what happens. If it still does same your wiring to that motor is kaput. But I think you'll see its the starter motor.

T-Bone is going to CPT this week sometime, phone him and ask if he cant look at it quickly before he goes. He can re-do the starter iso buying new.

Check your pm for his number.

HD, check the chassis solenoid . They give Sh**  from time to time . Had the same problem on my 60s.
Also guys, got an ace of an elec to sort out trim motors , mine was condemmed by all the major rewinders , got it sortedby a friend . Cost me a seal , 2x orings and two bearings . Cleaned up the coils and its working better than new , compared to R8000.00 for a new trim motor.
