Hi guys what is your opinion and/or experiences with the two... I recently bought some freswhater bass lures and I want to use them in estuaries and river mouths so I am just wondering what hooks I should put on the lures??? Much apreciated!

For me it really is very easy.
If you want to release fish you're only option should be singles.
Trebles might damage fish and your hookset is not that good.
-
Cool thanks! WHat is the hook up to strike ratio between singles and trebles in your experience?
-
initial (as in the start of the fight) will be slight higher for trebbles. But landing fish higher for singles.
When a single sits....it sits, it's not going anywhere
-
Great thanks for your help bru! What singles would you recommend to replace trebles with?
-
It really depends on the lure. Balance plays a huge role in a lures action. post some pics of the lures.
-
Ok cool here they are:

And some more...

I was actually just discussing this with Nico this morning and I had gone the singles rout with my poppers and stick baits. He just spent a week fishing with the guys from Jigstar and the hook up rate was at least 10 - 1. Trebles stuck every time!
Trebles all the way for me, I'm convinced... all over again.
Especially if you are fishing where you may only get the odd bite, if you are going to miss 9 out of 10 Id rather get that 1 bite with a treble attached to the belly of the popper.
-
Thanks for the input Bennie, I am a catch and release fisherman except for the odd Strepie, Pinky, Mullet etc. for bait, so I do want the fish I catch to have the best chance of surviving, so far I have not hooked a fish badly with trebles, I guess I have been lucky... But I will keep what you said in mind!
-
I Use salmo hornets with some sucess in esturies and find that the work well with singles

You know, I agree we hurt/damage the fish with trebles but most of the damage is done while removing the hooks. If you take care removing the hooks, most of the problems are gone. That said, I have seen so many damaged fish / deformed fish (in various pictures and caught) and they seem to survive well or else they wouldn't have been caught in the first place.

Thanks again bru :tkx:

I was surprised to hear it from NICO and I followed up to ensure the right hook size was used and it was. Should have known better than to have asked NICO a stupid question.
There might be a difference when certain species are targeted but this was gamefish and I can now put all by exspensive GAMAKATSU trebles back on. Good news for me.

I think it depends on what you are fishing and how you are fishing, both hooks have their advantages and disadvantages.
On poppers I prefer trebles, on spoons I prefer singles etc.....
Youf fishing style will also influence this...

Just picking up on this again beacuse I still have some doubts.
How did Nico rigged his poppers ?
Double singles on the belly and single at the tail ?
If Double single on the belly were they really wider than the lure ?
Like this ?

They are but I will double check when I get my box back from him eventually!

Try check the brand and model of the hooks also.

Fernando,
Even when changing hooks to high quality ST trebles I have found that descent fish under descent pressure the hooks tend to pull more frequently than on a baker rig in the middle and a single hanging off the back - I use SJ 41's (9 or 11/0 depending on lure size) as they back to back well and off the tail not too fussed - SJ, Gamy TU35, Jobu 8/0 all good. I just use a little cable tie to hold together middle ones.
I am quite surprised at the Jigstars teams much higher hook up rate ( and stay hooked) on trebles.... if I read this correctly ? I assume these were GT's ? The actual initial hook up may be higher on trebles - I havent fished them for a while but have certainly found less coming unbuttoned with the rig in your photo. Less pressure of course would mean them not pulling as much.

Just check the video :-)

By the way.
Baker rig translation for us mere mortals

Well I hope to report back after our trip to Inhaca. I got some stick baits from Roy and got doubles. Between them I have rigged one with Owner 4X 5/0 trebles, the other is baker rigged with Jigstar 13/0, the next is has only J hook 13/0 singles with a bit of extra length on the stinger and the last has a belly treble and standard 13/0 in the tail.
If the fish are around I will be able to test and see which has the better hookup rate.
-
In my opinion the Baker rig is the only way to go. All of my plugs and stickbaits are rigged with singles, and most of them with the back to back singles on the belly and a single on the back. I get the odd fish on the back hook, but most are on the belly hooks. Wahoo and Cuda are usually on the back hooks, Dogiies, GT's and YFT seem to mostly get caught on the belly hooks.
Trebles do get more initial hook ups, but a lot of those fish are lost during the fight, either to hooks straightening or often to hooks pulling, Singles almost never pull and if the quality is right then they will never straighten.
-
Thanks Tommo, this from a guy who nearly does it daily so that we who do not get out there to often, do not need to bang our heads unnecessarily.
Thanks again Tommo.
-
Tommo, what size hooks do you use for the back to back belly hooks? and what do you use to keep them together?
Thanks.

SUPER sorry to but in here. Would also love to hear from TOMMO, but I have found that the hook sizes vary immensely between manufacturers. This will be the gape. I got mine with the lures from ROY and then one can see the sizes and measure it out against the lure. In my case they are Jigstar J Hooks 13/0. Now that sounds huge but actually smaller than example Mustad BigGame 10/0. Different hooks entirely for different purposes.
-
I will revert back as soon as I've got my lures. I think the hooks were too small maybe!
-
The size hooks that I use vary depending on the size of the lure. I prefer a short shank, wide Gape hook with a large eye so that it can move freely on the split ring. When the two singles are back to back, I use a small cable tie to hold them in place. The smallest cable ties hold firmer. The hook points should protrude out a bit from the width of the lure. The back hook can be almost any size, but must be strong.
-
Good point Tuna. So maybe the better question is what size gape or maybe simpler, how far do you want the hook point / bend etc to be sticking out past the width of the body (if this makes sense)? A general rule that can be applied to all different sizes of lures etc?
Thanks.
-
Ah thanks Tommo.
-
The hook point only needs to protrude about 5mm, they are swinging anyway, and will get a hook up.
