I want to start using snap swivels when fishing with lures to make the changing of lures easier. Who uses snap swivels when fishing with lures? What brand of snaps do you use? Am I better of tying the lure directly to my leader?
-
Some guys like to use them
I prefer not to as i feel it effects the lure action... but that's my opinion
I use a rapala knot, i think it's the norm
-
Yep... Rapala knot allows the lure to swim freely as it is supposed to.
-
Thanks for the info guys. I will have to practice that knot then.
-
and using snap swivels on cuta duster / other traces? any comments on that?
-
The problem with snap swivels is that they tend to do exactly that SNAP! I popped 3 open a couple of weeks ago casting a 2oz sinker and that thing flys like 200 meters. Would hate to see your onde onde do that. The only good snap swivels are centro and I think sampo makes some but only seen huge ones

I'm pretty sure the Offshore guys use different tactics to what we do spinning in the Surf. Think Snap swivels are more the norm in offshore stuff like Couta Traces etc etc... :dunno: maybe one of the Croc manne will help us out here...
-
Ja, I was right... here are some of Jaen's Couta Traces.... but notice that the swivel will be hidden by the Duster...

Yup sorry was talking offshore rather than rock & surf
-
Thanks Reefman. Actually had not noticed that in Jaen's post earlier... i like the idea..
-
there is one that is AWESOME cant remember what its called but a guy got a marlin on one awhile ago while useing a 1oz plug and 10 or 12lb powerpro it was in the skiboat magazine... it looks almost like a paperclip if you guys know what im talking about?
-
with the spinning thing and canging from spoon to plug asd then to a dropshot there is a way which works really well and i was taught this by Baryy Wareham. You have split rings on all your lures and jig heads ans on your braid you have your piece of flourocarbon leader and attached to that you have a permanent number 5 power swivel as i can pass through most guides on the rod. And when wanting to change your lure you just use split ring pliers and take the swivel off your one lure and attach it to the next.
IT really works nicely and doesnt change the action of your lure...and i does not sound as complicated as i just made it out to be! haha

Forget snap swivels, tie knots
-
If you do use snaps, you the expensive kind. I only use them on drift traces and mostly when they are hidden by the skirt. Knots will always be better but sometimes I am just lazy and other times it is just more convenient. A snap swivel is better than a bad haywire or a knot made in hast on a boat and not with care.
-
Thanks for all the info. I think I must stop being lazy and go the Rapala Knot route. :tkx:

Rapala knot sucks, use a figire of 8 loop

Rapala knot sucks, use a figire of 8 loop
Is it a figure 8 that is not tightened??
-
Is it a figure 8 that is not tightened??
No, it is a figire of 8 properly tightend pulling both the line and the tag evenly tight until they lock. This is an ultra stron connection and you can 100% control the size of your loop
-
Sorry for all the questions. Wont it slip and tighten while fighting a fish?
-
as i understand, pulling the tag (once the desired loop has been made) locks down the knot, so it should not slip down and tighten (theoretically speaking...)
-

Not if you do it properly, once locked it does not move
-
Thanks. Will give it a try. Cred to you.

This method is fine to use, when you pull the tag end, the knot does tighten onto the line, leaving the desired size loop,
BUT it will never stay, the minute you have pressure from a fish that knot will with out a doubt slide and tighten all the way down to the Jig head / Lure
The knot works fine, but the only down side, is that after each fish, you have to retie the knot as it would have tightened up against the lure / jig head, and you won't have that natural presentation anymore
Rapala stays the most used and most practical for lures to keep the most natural presentation possible
-
Big g I have seen what the knot looks like after big yellowfin tuna off capetown I mean 80 kg angry yellowfin and the knot stays open...

I think it will work better on the thicker line diametre Steve, the line will probably bite into itself better
But for the lighter drop shot, especially when using flouro carbon, i have pulled the tag end tight with pliers even, and when pulling on the main line the knot slides down and tightens up
I have not used it on larger line diametres, but i would think that it would work better with thicker line diamtres, have not tried it
Smaller line diamtres for drop shot though, does not work for me
I'm sure a rapala knot is not going to work for 80kg tuna, but rather for light tackle fishing with lures
-
Nonsense, I ahve had big Tuna, Sailfish and HUGE sharks of 300+Kg and these knots have not slipped down when tied properly and I have been using them for years

You are tying it wrong, the trick is to pull the line and the tag end with even pressure, you will see that it warps perfectly with the 1st warp (Hook side) going smaller

@ fishing Adventures
I believe you 100%, but have you tried it on lighter line?
I doubt I am tieing it wrong, a figure of eight is not rocket science, i do pull down evenly, and only once the loop is set where i want it do i pull tight on the tag end to lock in place, my experience on lighter line for light drop shot be it flourocarbon or normal mono, is that the knot slides down, this was my experience and why i prefer to use the rapala
I have never used it for any heavier application like the fishing you guys do so i cannot comment there
I will go and try it again tonight and see if i can actually get that knot to set on the lighter stuff

I use the same knot for flie fishing and for drop shot, it works for me, even on Tuesday with 4lb line when we went for kingies

Hiya Fishing adventures
So i tried numerous times last night with different line diametres from .40 upto .80 to get that figure eight to tighten up firmly by pulling slowly and evenly, i pulled that knot to the point where i thought it would snap for sure if pulled any tighter, when pulling the main line with some pressure, the knot first gets stuck but then slides down to the swivel I was using
Perhaps you can show me at a future social, i believe you that it sets, i just can't get it right myself, but also can't see that i am doing something wrong

Hey Louis,
What i do is tie my leader to a small power swivel and attach a split ring to it.
This allows the lure to have the same or similar action as a rapala knot. Just carry a split ring plier, and bobs your uncle !
