Hi guys, over the Easter weekend I am going to a mates sugar cane farm, there are 2 farm dams with bass, but there is a "wild stream" running through the property, what are the chances that this stream holds wild trout or yellows? Any one willing to take an educated guess? Or have any info on where wild trout in the midlands area occur?
-
If its a tributary of the Mooi River then there is a possiblity !
-
Awesome, will try find out the exact location!
-
if it closer to the coast than say howick/nottingham road then def no trout, possibly yellows..
all depends on location.
-
Hmm, that could suck then, its close to Thornville, passed Maritzburg.
-
WK Maybe yellows and possibly vlei kurpers but no trout. I may be wrong but it's up to you to prove it. :hnthnt: Happy :fshn:

More likely to find raw sewage , rubble and informal settlement floaters w;k w;k w;k

Good point, im on it!!! :hnthnt:
-
WK - you might find scalies, kurper, bass and barbel in that stream. Best place for wild trout are the Mooi River, Loteni, Bushmans, and any of the small streams close to Cathedral Peak. Requires a bit of driving though....

That sound like a plan.
:-)

how far are the closest trout waters from Thornville?
WK - the closest for trout would be the Nottingham Road / Dargle area - then the next closest would be Underberg area. For yellows - the Richmond area apparently has yellow fish water - but access may be a problem because it would be on private land. There are yellows in the headwaters of Midmar dam (I think where the Umgeni river enters) - or so I have heard
-
Awesome thanks! What about Kamberg, they have a stretch of 6kms of trout river, not too far from where we are staying, anyone fished there?
-
i wish bru......they are here but not full up.....even the sandies arent as full up as previous years..ive seen a couple of good size cob and even a garric shot by a spearo.....the weather last week was perfect for flatties...im sure some must have come out....umkomaas has been doing well thou .....browns are super ubundant!!
-
stay away from kkamberg boet....the hatchary has been demolished...been there recently and it sucks to say the least! rather go to highmoor..its 8km from kamberg....one of ezemvelos best trout resorts...you must book to fish there thou...only 8 rod permits per day...and two exellent lakes to fish!!
-
Thanks rooiwil will keep that in mind :-)
-
Lots of dams in the Kamberg but may struggle with river frontage because its all on private land. Phone Wildfly in Notties and find out which farms you can pay to fish on.
For rivers your best bet is the Bushmans , in the Giants castle area. At the turnoff to White mountain the river runs along the road through a rural area, where you just need to chat to the local chief for permission to fish as a matter of courtesy. Its worth the trip.

I don't advise this. You do not want to be at the receiving end of a Zulu Mob on horse back, whilst fishing water in rural areas. They will take you out and if you can't speak Zulu, you are in even deeper trouble. Pay your admission fee and fish the Bushmans inside Giants Castle Reserve. At least then the only thing you need to worry about, is that your windshield wipers are covered with plastic bags in order to scare off that crow with the rubber fetish.
Do not take chances by fishing water on private land. Pay for your fishing at a reserve or lodge and enjoy what nature has to offer. If you want to get onto KZN FF Club Waters, get hold of KZN FF Club and go fish with someone thats a club member. This way you will get onto water that most people only hear off, but never get the chance to fish.

100% agreement here - I know of a number of victims of theft and damage to vehicles in that area - and also one person who was very threatened while fishing

:corrct: :udman: that has to be one of the best reply's I have seen for ages on the site. That is so much of the fun of fishing,, not knowing what will bite :+ cred: to youCharles

Did you fish that river?
I know the rivers around PMB and Greytown are teaming with yellows hey. Did you try a fly or two?
-
Funny question or comment but arent the rivers closed now until 1 September? All the places I looked into for this weekend to go and fish have said that river fishing is no available?
Also heard bad stories about the rural areas...

Thats right - however, if you go down to Rhodes in the E.Cape, you can still fish certain rivers in the closed season - see this http://www.wildtrout.co.za/winter-fishing (http://www.wildtrout.co.za/winter-fishing)
-
The trout season closes from 1st July to 1 September but you can still fish the rivers for yellows -just not the sections that hold trout obviously. The umko this time of year for example is great for scali..
