Is Oxeye Tarpon and Springer the same species?
How do you go about targeting them on bait and artificial lures?
-
Oxeye Tarpon is Megalops cyprinoides
Springer is Elops machnata
2 different species - the Springer gets much larger than the Oxeye.
Springer is also known as Skipjack in the Eastern Cape. You can't really target them, as they are usually bycatch and will take anything from a Sardine to a Rapala X-rap, and even a fly. When hooked, they jump clear of the water like a Billfish and fight like few other...!

The guys catch them often in the Swartkops river neer PE. Usely close to the brige on the national road. Lure that works well is poppers and bernini plugs. They also like small live mullet on the drift. Many years ago when we were stil young there numbers was stil high. Lately you are lucky to get one. The last one I caught was about 15 years ago. Then I can also add that we haven't targeted them in the last ten years.
