Spin-fishing in the Ballito, Salt Rock and Sheffield areas has been pretty slow of late with only shad being caught in the early mornings. So I was really chuffed to land this Garrick of about 100cm on Friday morning.
It was caught using the new Chase S bends poon, 12 pound Berkley Nanofil braid, and a Shimano Lesath rod paired with a Shimano Sustain 5000 reel. This particular S bend spoon is also great for shad.
The fish put up a great fight on the light tackle and I was not sure whether it was a Garrick (or Kingfish) until I saw it just behind the shore break. The fish was landed quite a distance to the south of where I was spinning but fortunately near a friend who was also fishing and had a phone handy to take a few pictures. The fish was then returned to the ocean and will hopefully get to breed and grow and then provide another angler (anglers) with a fantastic fight.

Question:
With the Nanofil... did you use a leader? If so, what knot did you use to attach the leader? What knot to the spoon?

Hi Gents thanks for the kind comments.
Reefman I was using 12 pound Berkley Nanofil joined to a casting leader of thicker (about 40 pound) Gator Braid. The Nanofil is joined to the Gator Braid using a modified cats paw knot (back to back 40 turn bimimis) by looping the Nanofil through the Gator Braid and then wrapping the nanofil around one leg of the Gator Braid 7 to 9 times. After a few outings I sometimes get a tag end on the Nanofil bimimi but the knot has never failed. Finally I join the Gator Braid to 30 pound fluorocarbon by doubling the braid and using a 8 turn uni on the braid and a figure of eight on the fluorocarbon. I have been using Nanofil since it was launched and have not had these knots fail. When getting a spoon stuck on a distant reef my braid normally parts on the Braid / Fluorocarbon join. Hope this makes sense.
Must note that with the slower action of the Lesath no casting leader is required. When using a faster action rod leader is needed if not using a finger guard or elastoplaster around your finger.

Thanks for the info... we have had endless problems with trying to knot Nanofil to a leader with any consistency. Eventually I gave up thro' frustration and binned my Nanofil.

I believe nanofil to be the best casting line that I have used for light tackle spinning.
I must add to reply above that I also occassionaly fish nanofil to fluorocarbon without casting leader and join these in the same manner as joining light braid to flourocarbon - double the nanofil and tie a 8 turn uni in the nanofil and figure of 8 on with the fluorocarbon.

Reefman - hard to believe you're having problems with knots so I thought I mention two recent experiences with nanofil. There are very few knots I can't tie so I was a bit baffled as well. Experience 1 - I came across an angler with a spanking new outfit on the beach recently which included nanofil. I watched him tie a few of the tried and tested knots and the nanofil parted at various places. On one of the knots that I used it parted consistently at the knot. Now without a setup to test the breaking strain at which the nanofil parted it was difficult to determine whether the nanofil parted at/beyond it's stated breaking strain in which case you cannot fault the nanofil. From what I experienced I was not impressed with nanofil.
Experience 2 - I related experience 1 to a friend with a similar outfit a few weeks ago and he allowed me to test the nanofil as much as I needed to. I did the same as previously and pulled the knots until it just about cut into my arms and nothing gave way!
Was experience 1 a bad batch of nanofil? You be the judge... I don't know and will need a bit more testing before switching from the tried and tested jigman.

Ya that Nanofil's got me beat... seems the best way to use it is the casting leader using Midified CatsPaw to join 2 Bimini's. I've given up trying to tie a mono leader direct to the Nanofil.
