Seems as if the Onde Onde has re-surfaced as "The Onda". Now on sale at The Kingfisher and doesnt seem too bad at all. Bought a couple and now would like to know what singles would be suitable. Comes in 2 sizes, 23gr and 35gr. What size single for each size??
-
gavin erwin picked one up last week for R73, are they the same ones do you think Rods?
-
I use a # 3 Big Gun (recomended by Reefs and Kinfisher) Remember to add an additional split ring and the hook must point upwards. Shad went mad on mine on Sat, some shad the size of the onda.

Could be WK. I bought mine at the local here in Empangeni and the 23gr sells for R53 and the 35gr goes for R60. Just a couple of rands diff compared to Kingfisher so I decided to support our local shop

Nice one!!!

Rods, Kingfisher has acquired the know-how from Maria to reproduce that lure. Taken almost 2 years to get back into production. Odd one in the batches that slightly off but overall they're producing so epic fish with their trademark action!!
As CLS says that hook size is good and yes it's a Mustad hook.

is it ok to use two rings in order to get the hook to face up?

Yes, just be sure to use forged rings
-
Hi Rod, yes as Mike says forged as they are strong, I bought a pair of stainless steel split ring pliers from Kings for R45 work like a bomb. I also put a ring in the front with a small power swivel seems to work better.

100% correct, makes a huge improvement

I've started using these on a lot of my small lures as I couldn't find splitrings that were small and strong enough to tackle the tuna in the Musandam. I thread them onto the lure without any split rings with the points facing up they do less damage than trebles (but more than singles) and are super strong.
-
Wow, what a brilliant idea!! Wonder if you can get them in SA... must have a look for them.
-
Thanks Tony
Here's a shoddy picture but you'll get the idea

Great idea, can you get them in SA ?, otherwise i will ask Damon to bring me a few when he comes out on Saturday for his break

That looks brilliant Cam

I have a few of those hooks that I bought locally once, can't remember where
-
I use a Mustad 4/0 or 5/0 hoodlum on my Onde Ondas. I open the eye of the hook (very gently) with a side cutter and a screwdriver and put the hook directly onto the lure. Then I squeeze the eye shut again, in the vice. I broke 1 or 2 hooks when I first tried, but have not had any problems since then. The hook remains more vertical than if you use 2 split rings. Have caught numerous shad on this setup, and the bonus is you can pull it over other lines / rocks / whatever without getting you lure caught up.

Finally manged to get the lures rigged up. First time for me. :happ: . Thanks to everyone for the advice

Managed to go and give the a go this afternoon. Quite impressed with the action. Afternoon was very quiet and only had on follow. Then out of nowhere, BAM, fish on. Cant tell how excited I was. And then the fish came up. TOBY. Arrrgghhhh. Well at least I know they work. :hehe: .
However my biggest disappointment for the day was on my big rod. Had a shad livie out and for just over an hour nothing. Then I hear the ratchet go off. Quick run then it stopped. Left it just in case the fishy decided to come back. And come back he did. All of a sudden :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: . Got the rod quickly out of the stand and almost had it ripped out my hands. This thing just didnt want to stop. Had my drag almost full on and still the line just peeled off. Within a minute or so, half my mono was gone and just as I was wondering how I was going to stop this fish, my line just parted at the spool. Could have cried. Anyway there's always next time.
-
(clap) Nice catch .... :hehe:
-
Eish... no luck Rods... nice adrenalin rush, eh? :hehe:
Don't make the mistake of tightening up your drag too much on the first run... let the fish go with a moderate drag. The line in the water will tire him and then you can turn it.

Thanks Reefs. Going to have another go this arvie.
