Trawl soldiers/blue skin
« on: February 15, 2021, 01:57:06 PM »
I'm looking for information on catching trawl soldiers. I'm looking for marks or general areas where to get them off Durban. I've tried fishing in areas where guys tell me where they've caught them and I've spent hours in water depths of 130m to 170m and all I've caught is the green eyed sharks.

Hi Ingwidi

I've also been "donated" marks for blueskins, none of them produced. I only learned later that the real co-ords are not ever shared. We eventually spent quite a bit of money on fuel finding structure that produced. I was also told by some old hands at DBSBC that these fish move to different reefs during the day to feed.
I suppose the time, money and effort it takes to discover these reefs makes them closely guarded secrets.

Hi everyone yesterday I decided to launch and had a lead on the whereabouts to find trawl soldiers, got out to the mark and there was alot of tuna/Bonito action on surface. After getting one tuna the action stopped I checked the current was flying so I was in 2 minds about trying the bottom but my fiancÚ convinced me to give it a try. First down I got the first bump on my rod,had a long wind up but was rewarded with 2 trawl soldiers.ended up 2 drifts 4 trawl soldiers. Current was flying but the circles worked well to hook the fish.

I don't normally take many photos of my fish. I'm back at work now, so I'm out of the country for the next 8 weeks, when I'm back I'm gonna try again this time with photo evidence for you guys.

Hi....I think, if I am not mistaken, that they are also referred to as Bluenose Kingfish or Bluenose( bluenose warehou, deepsea trevally, blue eye trevally, bluenose sea bass, or deep sea trevally,) which are targeted in New Zealand waters, but not so much in RSA?
I found this site with pictures and/or references to a similar(if not same?) fish. If/when photos are posted, maybe a comparison can be drawn?

I launched about 2 weeks ago looking for sollys. Went to a few spots and eventually found them on a 120 m mark I have. 12 downs and 18 fish. Nothing spectacular  but lots of fun and a pile of fish in the freezer.
If I remember correctly  those bluenose are being targeted at extreme depths. In the order of 300 to to 600 m. Mostly on electric reels and fishing a string of 10 hooks or more.

I have been Following jacob on Facebook for some time and he has gone all out in targeting these bottom dwellers,

Electric reels and the works, his efforts paid off with some good fish

when days are dark...Fish are few ...Tag it, or bag it.
Sharks swim slow before they attack.
Smile and Sail... or Frown and Drown.

That's the guy. He also posted a long article about how to find fish and reefs mentioning time of day tide etc.
Was very informative. Even for an old geezer like me!
