Reefman - Thank you for all the awesome tutorials, these are really easy to follow and very informative.
I pretty much always service my own reels and am presently using two Stradic 5000Fj models for shore spinning.
I have never quite gotten my head around the best way these reels should be lubed / greased considering these are used continuously for about 2 hours 4 times a week. That a lot of casting and retrieving. I have used the Kingfisher red grease, various grades of Rocket Fuel Liquid Grease and combinations of all three and some other that I cannot remember the names of but have not found any really suitable combinations.
I contacted Rapala VMC ( Shimano agent is SA) to purchase some reel oil and the original manufacturers grease. I was forwarded grease that is green in colour and works pretty well on gears together with oil in Shimano embossed bottle - the same you used to get in box with new reel.
I now grease gears (pinion, drive and idle gears) with green Shimano grease taking care not to get grease on the main shaft and then oil all other components worm gear, bearings etc with Shimano oil. This seems to work pretty well and I then re oil main shaft from the top after removing the line spool and also add oil through maintenance port after every 4 outings (8 hours of spinning) or so. This keeps the reels running pretty smoothly.
I was wondering if you know of any really good quality grease / lubricants that can be applied to bearings shafts and gears that will not detract from the smoothness and ease of retrieve with these reels. From experience I know that over greasing makes the real harder to turn especially if you get grease on the main shaft that sits inside the pinion gear.
Any assistance will be much appreciated.

If you use a low viscosity grease, (soft, not thick and sticky) it shouldn't affect the functioning at all, even if you do get it on the Shaft.
Remember that when you start using the reel, the grease is unheated and might seem slightly stiffer, but as soon as you've reeled a few times, the heat generated will make the grease more flowable and the reel will become smoother...

I generally use Cal's grease for bearings, drags and general use. I bought a huge tub from Jagged edge - it should last me forever! But I still like the Kingfisher/Surecatch red grease.
Oils: Reel-X oil. Quantum Hot sauce. The Shimano oil is fine.

Slightly off topic (possible new topic should be started) will be interested to hear from anyone using the new Stellas especially the 5000. I am interested to hear how waterproof these reels are. Can you have a wave break over or on you and not have to strip the entire reel and then re-lube and oil? The new Stradic and Sustain are not really that waterproof and the Roller Clutch and Shaft bearings take a beating even from being splashed and having waves break on you.
Have read a couple of reviews on new Stellas and all comments on reels are pretty positive.

The Stradic is not very waterproof at all - there are no seals under the Rotor or on the handle, so for safety sake, I strip mine after every trip. In the meantime, make sure your bearings are greased full up.
The Stella's? Ya still the best of the best, but you could probably buy 5 or 6 Stradics for one Stella...

so should flippin' hope they are waterproof!!

Q20 is oil, not good enough for lasting protection of Spinning reel bearings and seals. Grease is a must.

I use my Stradic on the boat and shore and it takes a hammering, I only rinse it off after each trip but send it in for a service every 3 months or so, costs me R80 bargain. PS, just myself a new one

So I have taken apart most of it, but there is still something in there, its not smooth smooth as it was when it was brand new last week, almost like there is a grain of sand somewhere right inside. Will have to take it all apart tonight once I have picked up my grease.

Lets hope I can put it all back together again!

I have got to the end of a standard service. But when I twist the golden thing that looks like a spiral noodle - still got that light grinding happening. Quite bleak because the reel is brand new only used once!

Grease is not helping. will have to try scrubbing with benzine. Where can i buy benzine?

Oh, and that little nut in the tutorial where it says "don't lose this nut" - never even saw it!

ThE Spiral golden noodle is the Pinion gear. It turns against bearings... which will be the cause of the grinding... I think your pinion gear bearings are shot. Have you tried opening them up and cleaning them out?

I have not tried that yet... haha I have spent 2 evenings now fiddling with this thing!

I was hoping to not go that far into the tutorial considering the reel is still so new - but it appears I have no other choice.

Will try get some benzine today, take it apart fully and scrub.

I have taken it apart and put it together now twice so I at least know the standard service routine pretty well!

I am starting to doubt my wisdom in purchasing this reel!
