Great article Reefman, really awesome.   :+ cred:     :win:

One thing I've always noticed when it comes to casting is that "practice makes perfect"

I've seen guys with the most awkward casting style swing a sinker and big bait a mile.  Then guys with the most perfect swing gets one over-wind after another.  Practicing under fishing conditions is the only way to truly perfect your casting.  Even if you are an "accomplished casting machine" like Tony   :hehe: , don't expect to pick up a new setup and get maximum range on your first outing.  It has to be "broken in first."  (and no, you don't need a shitkicker-cowboy hat like Homie to break in this mustang.)   Once you are comfortable with your casting abilities, try a new technique, etc, etc.

I remember when I first started casting with my grandwave - children and sensitive adults weren't allowed near me because of the  :cens .  Now I can comfortably cast even a 30cm live mullet without even thinking what to do.

So, like everything else - practice, practice, practice!

Ive noticed that with my old 16" Conoflex rods (that I will not change) when I really put my back into it, I cast a few hundred metres, however the strop seem to take a "SOLO" any tips on that? Ive had this issue for about 20 years now and can say that I manage to rocket at least 2 strops per day.... I have used stronger line however I am sure I am not alone...

Do you mean that you're snapping off traces when casting?
Question: Are you using a Leader? If not, that's your problem.
If you're using a leader, then they shouldn't be breaking, then the problem is your knots.

Yes I use leaders I use swivels with snap clips  that I just connect to my trace as I brebait them remove ones that come out of  water hook new ones cast. This just gives me time to rebait at my time while  the lines are in the water. However I have managed to replace the eyes on the  rods etc as I thought this could be the problem, I make sure I lubricate the  knots and use the Fishermans knot.. However I still lose it every now and  then,,,

Wynand... go through this post on casting a multiplier... you should be using these techniques with leaders and knots.

http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/index.php?topic=9720.0

You should be using a 7-9m leader, with your mainline doubled and tied as shown.
The old Fisherman's knot is a very poor alternative to what is available nowadays, especially if you're tying your leader to your mainline with it!!

PS: Please don't try the High compression Off the Ground cast with the old Conoflex rods, I don't think they are strong enough to withstand the casting force of an Off the ground High compression cast.

Wynand is it not perhaps the snap swivel opening up? I had the same experience at Rietvlei where putting your back into the cast results in those small snap swivels opening up.
