Places like Nyati are expensive because it cost the owners millions to build there. They are secluded and the only way to get there is by boat. The same goes for all the other resorts on the other islands in the Archipelego. Can you imagine just the cost of transporting all the building materials to get these places built?? :cnfzd

If you stay on the main land in Vilanculos it will cost you R400 pppd at many a great establishment, why because building materials are easier to get, only problem is the fishing from the main land is just about none existent. So now you must charter a boat to get to these out of reach places.

So its expensive yes, but not unreasonable!!

Sorry Prego, but it is unreasonable, when the 'building' is paid off will they adjust the rates??? not on your nelly, you can do the Marlin/Sailfish university at Hemingways for 26k, 8 nights including 3 flights!!(and I think that is expensive) Or as shag said Phuket for 12 nights at 10k pp!!!
IMO they are theives!!!!!

12 nights in Phuket does not include fishing!! :cnfzd

Which place does??

I'd rather to six days on Bazaruto and stay at a 7 star resort that is Indigo bay and fish with Duarte for under R30k all inclusive :crzy

Hi Guys, I have read through this thread and have a few comments. I built a and ran lodge in Moz, so have a fair idea of what is involved. It is a very difficult country to do business in, and things do tend to be expensive. Getting fuel, gas etc to the lodge is usually very expensive due to logistics. These lodges have to provide their own water, power etc and this costs an enormous amount of money. There are all sorts of licence fees etc payable to the Mozambique government that have to be built in to the costs.
Add the odd backhand payment that has to be made from time to time to keep local officials off your back and you have big overheads. For this reason it is very difficult to keep rates down. Add to this the cost of flights to Vilanculos and the necessary transfers to remote locations and it is becoming even more expensive. Then there is boat maintenance and depreciation etc etc.

Lodges like Linene and Nyati are not making big profits by any means, they are barely keeping going in the current economic climate.  Even though the rates seem expensive, that is simply the reality of visiting a fully catered establishment in a remote area.

I don't know their official occupancy rates, but would put it at around 20% at the moment, these lodges are taking strain...

The stronger Metical does not help their cause has it makes everything so expensive for South Africans to visit. In December all lodge owners that we visited in the archipelego were telling us how quiet they were and it was visible.

Hard times ahead! :-(

Thats bad I think that anything less than 40% starts affecting the 'break even' its possibly a good time to start giving specials........start being creative and get bums in beds?? Mauritius has done the same thing in the last 2 years, there are some good deals to be had there, wheras it used to be out of the park!!

Hi Tommo, I understand all the costs involved in running a place like that I just got sad because for me it will only stay a dream, unless of course I won the lotto  :hehe: . I can camp for 24 months at Rocky Bay for that amount of money. You cannot compare Rocky bay and camping with Nyati but 24 months is a long time.

They are giving specials, at this stage most packages quoted are as cheap as they can do them without actually losing money. The problem for the cheaper lodges is that the five star lodges are aslo desperate and offering rock bottom rates as well, so the market is flooded with similar priced packages...

I hear you Willie! You are absolutely right. I am in the same position, believe me. If it wasn't for sponsorship etc I wouldn't be going to all the places I get to. I certainly wouldn't be able to take my wife on a fishing trip to the islands. I make up for it with some excellent local trips, we still have some good fishing around.

They have been punting the resort big time through OTC adventures even advertising during the shows intervals!

True Tommo fishing seems to bad at the moment but I am sure it is a way of nature to protect its own. It will pass again and then we will all be smilling again. BTW again a superb program on Monday.
