First Tuna and a few tail
« on: February 28, 2012, 12:09:27 AM »
Hi,
So i finally managed to push out my return to Sierra Leone and get a days fishing off cape point. Reports were not too good with regards to tunny but we had heard good reports of yellowtail being about.
An early morning start and fairly smooth sailing took us out from houtbay to approx 15miles off the coast where we saw plenty of commotion on the water with birds diving all over the place. Being too close for tuna we put in some light rods and trolled a selection of lures including , rapala xraps.
the anticipation and excitment paid off in minutes when the reel went :sreel: , first fish was mine and it was a nice size tail, within 30 minutes we had 3 more and then the bite was off so we decided to head deep for some bigger sport.
After reaching 30miles the bigger rods came out when we saw some vague marks on the sounder, lures were set and we all settled into a comfortable position with eyes out for the action on the water ears trained on the reels  :hnthnt: .

Eventually after sometime a reel screams and it looks good, the fight was a tad short but it produced a lovely skipjack, a short while later two rods bend and the reels run, I manage to get one of the rods and the fight is on. Finally something bigger with some decent power  :fshn:  , the first Tuna gets landed and its a longfin, I had to take a bit of time with mine as the line was thinner that the first. I get the fish near the boat and true to form the tuna is off like a gas bottle, rod bends, reel drags and back gets tight :) this was what I wanted!
Eventually I manage to get the fish to the boat and land my first tuna! I have been champing at the bit to get a tuna and I was greatly satisfied!
The rest of the day was fairly uneventful except for a large pod of dolphins kicking up a fuss with the birds on the way home, what a sight!
All in all a GREAT day on the water , i cant wait to get out again! :happ:
For now im back in Sierra Leone and so far its Barracuda after barracuda.............  :cnfzd

finally got that YFT now for the YFT on a jig!
