Epic Bass fishing in Volksrust
« on: January 24, 2012, 11:00:25 am »
So its been a while since my last report.  One tends to not report on average days or trips.

More memorable was a recent trip to the private quarry near Britz.  Myself and ProKayak (Gawie) caught 115 bass in 3 hours.  Nothing big but it kept us very busy.

Last weekend I went to visit my brother on his farm close to Volksrust.  As part of the arrangements I asked him to set up a morning session with his good friend Raymond.  Sunday morning 5AM I met Raymond and we went to a private farm dam.  I took my sister's son along for his first bass trip.

It was misty and cold and nothing was happening for the first 2 hours.  Around 7AM we started getting bites.
My sister's son was rewarded with his first bass.

We decided to move to the other dam and on the way back to the bakkie Raymond picked up this nice fish equaling his PB of 2.1kg.  The fish are a bit skinny.

At the other dam i started throwing a Spro frog with my new Culcatta 50 reel.  I had 7 takes but only managed to land one fish.  I now agree with the bad hook-up rate I heard about with the hollow bodied frogs.

I changed to a big Hula popper on a spinning rod with new Nanofil line.  I was able to cast a mile with that setup and continued to hit 8 bass of over 1.5kg on top water up to 11:00 when we had to leave.  Lucky for me those farm bass from the Freestate have not read all the books and forums about how to behave around top water baits.  It was the most exhilarating top water fishing I have ever done in my life - huge strikes.

This is a picture of the avarage sized fish for the day

I will be back there soon....

Only seeing this now.

Was great to get a chance to show your guys some of our fishing spots, just glad the fish eventually got on the bite! I was a bit worried there 2 hours into the session....

Just got my hands on some small (1/2 the regular Spro Frog's size) hollow frogs, can't wait to try them out, I think the 1-1.5kg bass will have a easier time swallowing them!

Hopefully we'll have a bit more time for fishing next time you are here, there's a few more dams you need to see  w;k

Nice Report !  :tkx:
