Sabie River?
« on: November 09, 2011, 09:21:10 AM »
Hi guys, going on leave from this Friday until the following Friday... The main aim for this leave is to gather some information, get pictures, videos and record sounds for a few of our websites. There will also be some R&R involved. The place we are staying is a fewkms from the Kruger Park and has access to fishing on the Sabie River... I have always wanted to fish this river, what I want to know is has anyone ever fished one of these Lowveld Rivers or the Sabie itself?

What would I be targeting essentially? Was thinking about taking my fly fishing outfit as I wont have a lot of space to take any tackle with, maybe a spinning setup... Any advice, tips or info would be awesome!

My only experience with the sabie river was arresting some fish poachers while working at kruger for job shadowing at school so I know for a fact they have kurper. What resort are you staying at?

Cool Brad, any other info by any chance?

Staying at Hazyview Cabanas, I have seen Barbel on the low lying bridge close to Skukuza before and have seen a few small Tigers as well...

Walks there should be Lowveld Yellows as well , lekker fun on the fly .

Couple of years back we found a rock pool with a nice rapped running through it ( Natural jacuzzi ). :geet We sat in the rock pool enjoying a couple of Scotland’s finest and ran out of drinking water as a mixer. At the time it was thought to be a good idea to use the Sabie rivers water as a mixer instead  :craz: duh . It took me at least a month and about 300 rolls of twin ply to get over that bright idea.

So whatever you do,  DO NOT DRINK THE RIVER WATER !!!!!!!!!!! :rotfl

Get some earth wurms for the tilapia and a plattie or two for barbel. Speak to the locals they will be able to help with earthwurms, the platies you going to have to look around the waters edge. Good luck and enjouy.

In Hazyview you better watch out for Crocs and Hippo.
I would take the Fly Gear and maybe hit the Sabie between Merry Pebbles and the Timber Mill.

Or shoot straight through to Pelgrims and hit the Blyde for some Browns, Bows and Yellows.
For both of these venues you need a permit that you can obtain from big Sky Outdoor in Sabie.

Then you have Da Gama dam oustide Hazy and the there is that dam close to Graskop, forgot the name....think it's Inhacka or something like that. Bass Galore!!!

If you are willing to travel a bit I would suggest some fishing on the Nkomati at Komatipoort for Yellows, Tigers, Kurper, etc. But stay out the water!!! Those crocs will take you off the rocks!!!!

Best way of hooking a Tiger at Komati:

Take a bass rod and add a black trace and hook.
No Sinker.
Get Ox Liver, cut it in stirfry strips and rig as you would do with a bass worm.
Chuck it in along structure, let it sink and reel in slowly.
Make sure the drag is set, cause KAPOWWWWWW, your on!!!

These would be my options :hnthnt:

If you fish Komatipoort you have 3 options:
1. Park inside the Caravan Park at the low water bridge
2. Park at the Sasol Garage next to the main road and walk down to the bridge over the river.
3. Let someone drop you and fetch you later

You do not want to leave your car unattended, unless you like donating car radios, speakers, cellphones, etc, etc.

And don't take small kids to that water, that is just an open invite to those crocs.
