Epic running event from Kosi Bay to Cape Town
« on: November 03, 2011, 11:15:37 AM »
My nephew did a cycling trip from Malawi to Pretoria last year.
This year he plans to run from Kosi bay to Cape to raise funds for charity.

He requested whether I could assist with certain information as per extract from his e-mail.
Maybe somebody in UA has some advice re campsites?

EXTRACT:
My name is Theo Boshoff, a 3rd year LLB student at Tuks, and an amateur adventurer. This long holiday I will be embarking on an epic adventure to raise money for the Nomad African Trust and their beneficiaries.

The Nomad African Trust is a large charitable organization with a number of beneficiaries. Most notably is the Gwenixtaba community in the Wild Coast where they are teaching local communities farming practices that are less destructive on the ecosystem and helping them to start community-based tourism. Also, the Judah house center in Knysna was established to provide a safe haven for people struggling with addiction.

What I am aiming to do is to run from Kosi Bay (on the Mozambique border) all the way to cape town during our long holiday at the end of the year to raise awareness and funds for the trust. This will entail 2300kms of running over beaches, cliffs, mangrove swamps, and hills over the course of 78 days, Hopefully reaching Cape Town (where the Nomad African Trust is based) before the end of it. The event will be quite widely published. To date, the trust and I have been communicating with SA Runners World, Merrell, and a number of radio stations along the coast. In addition, we are setting up a blog on www.nomadafricantrust.co.za where people can follow my trip, there will be a blog, a place where I can update photos, and a place where people can make donations.

The first leg of my journey will be through the isimangaliso Wetland park from Kosi bay to St. Lucia. For permit purposes the park insists that I need to have accommodation booked in advance. Isimangaliso insists full payment for at least 2 persons plus the campsite at all of their campsites even though it will only be myself on foot, with a tiny tent. Since my trip is essentially a charity event, my budget is unfortunately quite small. Does anyone know of alternative campsites in Mabibi, Cape Vidal, or St.lucia? I will be in Mabibi on the 25th of November, Cape Vidal on the 28th, and St. Lucia on the 29th. Also, does anybody know if the imfolozi river mouth is currently open to the sea? Any help in this regard will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and Kind Regards,
Theo Boshoff

Wish him well!
The Umfolozi River Mouth is currently closed, it has been manually closed and was joined up to the St Lucia Estuary bend. Since they joined it, it has dried up significantly and the join is 'non-existent'. But as it stands, the only way there will be an opening to the sea is if the Estuary breaks through. The estuary end is now about 500-800m from the sea, so unless there are floods, it will remain that way for the foreseeable future...  :-(
