Make your travels through Mozambique easier
« on: September 27, 2011, 10:14:47 AM »
Well its that time of year when we are all planning our December getaways and many of us venture into Mozambique to do what we love ...........FISHING  fshg

We all think that  :mxmb: but we hate those pesky cops that stop us holiday makers to make a quick buck/ irratate us/ or simply do their jobs on our way to our desired destination. Over the years I have found that keeping calm and speaking their language ( Portuguese )  makes things so much easier, so to help the non Portuguese speaking members I thought I would share a few phrases and words that you can learn to help you along your way.

This is your basic greeting and things you will be asked for when stopped, so use these simple phrases to control the situation

Good morning         -  Bom Dia
Good Afternoon       - Boa tarde
Good Evening          - Boa noite
How are you?          - Como esta
I am well                -  Estou bem
Its very hot             - Esta muito calor
Thank you               - Obrigado
Please                     - Por Favor
Yes                          - Sim
No                           -Nao
Drivers licence          -Carta de cunducao ( it actually says it on your card )
Car documents          - ducamentos do carro
Boat                         - Barco
Trailer                       - Atrelado
Where are you going  - A onde e que vais
I am going to _ _ _ _  - Eu vou para _ _ _ _ _ _ (destinaion)
Good bye                   - Ate logo / Ciao (not really a Portuguese word but every one uses it

We all love stopping by the road side or at your destination and barter up a deal or 2

How much                  - Quanto custa
Bread(that we all love) - Pao
Prawns                        - Camarao
Calamari                      - Lulas
Crabs                           -Carageijo
Chicken                        - Galinha
Fish                              - Peixe
This one                       - Este
Beer                             - Cerveja

That's pretty much it for the simple stuff, maybe John F and Peterblace can add to this.

Remember your reflective vests, traingles, stick to the speed limits & stay calm and don't forget your Por Favor and Obrigado

Paulo - great advice mate! I wish I was multi-lingual.... takes all misunderstandings out of the "picture".

One other thing that is HUGELY IMPORTANT is our attitude when in a foreign country. We are VISITORS in Mozambique. GUESTS!!!! We need to be good guests (the perception of a fair number of the local folk - is that we are this arrogant, unpleasant, noisy, vitriolic, alcohol imbibed "species" from the South!!!!!). With money!

Once we cross the border..... we need to slow down, calm down, drive carefully, be polite (I always give a gentle nod, a grin,  and a wave to the traffic cops.... generally works pretty well), and if stopped always defer to them with respect. They are in uniform which is a huge status in Moz - a little respect goes a long way. Time also has different meaning there..... we just want to get back in the car and drive to our destination, but here is this flippen traffic cop trying to smoke me!!! Be polite, calm, yabber away about the weather, keep nodding and smiling.... and sometimes after 30 minutes or so they wave you on....and nobody is any the worse off.

Attitude, deference and a simple smile goes a long way.

In the next 2 weeks, loads of people head North to Guinjata, Barra etc. with all all the comps coming up....... keep a little positive attitude in the pocket - works wonders most of the time.

Cheers, RB

This is the right time to STAY CALM
