Casting big throw baits
« on: August 11, 2011, 12:27:43 PM »
hi guys
i need to learn how to throw, throw baits now. especially the big throwbaits.
i suck at this.
tackle loomis sharky+saltist 50 +.50line
7oz sinker - macky head + cutlet bait and i only got like 40mts.
put an 8oz got less distance.
grap sinkers used.

i tried a double sardine with mbonnie fillet, got like 40mts as well with a 7oz.
the lighter the sinker, the bigger the overwind. 7-8oz was fine.
is ther any techniques compared to chucking a normal 8-9oz for sliding.
its a huge difference.

Practice! Try making your baits more streamlined and clipping your sinker. Also make sure your action is smooth just a sinker is far more forgiving on your technical mistakes than a sinker and bait

Homie has got some videos of throwing Big baits somewhere?!?!  <:

This is what we use to practice....

Conveyor belt... 8oz. Remember the biggerb the bait, the bigger the sinker needed to maintain the spool revolution...

So, it's 8oz bait, 8oz sinker = 16oz throwing... this is dangerous to do on any rod, so you need to be careful... very smooth lob action. If you jerk it, you'll snap your rod...

it's not massive... i've had 2 ined successes, or kinda successes, one was a big stingray, broke leader at the mountain after 2 hours, one was a bronzie... both were on smaller frigates....

I look for a frigate about the length of a decent pilchard... but then they are much rounder.... about 22 - 25cm.  i use a double J trace, and hook the frigate on exactly the opposite way you would if you were sliding it. head facing down.  clip those little pecs and tail off, and then i cable tie the trace at the head and also by the second hook, to make sure everything runs in a "straight stripe"....

with a circle this drops down to about 50m 60 max, as i havent perfected bait presentation clipping a circle, it's always flapping in the wind!

Another thing to remember when throwing big baits is to tighten your cast control knob to start with, otherwise it's bunch time.
