Spraybooth.... ugly but it works
« on: June 14, 2011, 09:12:59 AM »
This is probably the ugliest spray booth  out there, but it works…..

Basically a big plastic container,  modiefied…
The filter is also home made…. Aluminium mesh  that holds a piece of batting to serve as an air fiter

I salvaged this “sosatie rotisserie” from  an old braai… this way I can rotate several lures with 1 motor… nice for drying  lures. Currently I have roughly fitted the original rotisserie motor that came  with the braai, but I will be changing to one of those microwave motors from  Bennie

At the back I have 2 x 220v fans. For now the booth is set up so that the filtered air is vented through an open window

I currently have it set up to hold three  lures, but it can take up to 8 at a time for the application of base coats and  for drying

Here is a rudimentary, yet effective paint  jig for doing single lures

It has an interchangeable “head” so that I  can rotate rods to dry flex-coat after rod repairs or guide replacements

Looks great! Where did you buy the fans, if you don't mind me asking. I will need to do the same shortly.

Do you mean that a spark from one of the fan motors could cause a fire?

I think that is exactly what he means.

I doubt it would be... but Andre doesn't need to worry too much in my opinion! Definitely not in a DIY airbrush environment.

A flame proof motor is generally enormous, has a solid cast iron casing and weighs a ton. The terminal box would be nearly as big as Andre's whole paint boot! Motor alone would cost R6000. I can show 100's of paint plants that do not have flame proof motors in the paint area.

Bennie, I have also seen many a spray booth that is non flameproof, just be carefull and keep spare thinners and paint away from the area where you spray, and the room is well ventilated, I have also seen a spray booth that has gone boom. I am not telling you what to do and this is not a pep talk, just some safety advice.

There are flame proof and spark proof fans for spray booths, BIG difference in the price.
Education is important but fishing is importanter !

Thanks for the advice guys.... I'll take some extra precautions just in case. I did investigate those spark-proof motors, and purpose build hobby spray booths, but they are difficult to come by and prohibitively expensive. I'll just be real careful

Hi Hooch, would you mind sharing more info on this booth? Maybe a picture, and where you got it from?

It's an industrial spray booth.

That would be a little expensive. A spray booth should cost around R60 000-00 + VAT.
