SL50 Service Problem
« on: May 16, 2011, 01:23:34 PM »
After succesfully servicing my SL30 a couple of weeks back, I decided to try my hand at servicing my 50. Shouldnt be a problem I thought, same reel, just bigger parts.

I have been trying for the last couple of hours to put the Right hand side plate back. I have been experiencing the following:

The spring for the clutch keeps on slipping out of place, now I finally have it in place. When I put the cover back on the drive shaft wont turn properly. Its as if the "circle" piece of the spring is putting the small gear out of place that connects to the big gear with the drag washers.

I did at test to see what the problem was. I left the spring out and put the cover back. The shaft turns sweet. I put the spring back for the clutch and it starts its trouble again.

Any suggestions short of tacking it to the tackle shop???? Reefz??? :dunno:

THE clutch has a little nipple on it that needs to slot into the Yoke plate... if that's not clipping in properly, then the clutch won't work and your reel won't turn. Before you screw the Side plate on, move the clutch lever gently until it engages the Yoke plate... then it should go smoothly from there...? Let me know...

Now the spring for the clutch keeps on slipping, or the circular piece that the clutch lever fits to keeps on slipping past the point where it should stop, thereby loosening the tension on the piece and making the spring piece pop out. Do you think I could have take to much plastic off by trying to get that spring to stay in place so many times?

Also regarding the yoke plate. Must it sit right against the drive shaft? Must those triangular pieces lift the small gear or should they stop before or after(yoke plate against the drive shaft) the gear.

Thanks for the help Reefz. :tkx:

AD...
This is what the spring setup should look like... make sure you have it oriented like the pic below.

Then the Yoke plate should sit like it is below... the triangular pieces lift the yoke when you engage the clutch lever, thus disengaging the Pinion Gear from the main drive gear. Try pushing the Yoke plate all the way forward before  fitting the side  plate.

Thats exactly how I am doing it. Except that circular piece that the lever fits to keeps on moving anti-clockwise under the tention of the spring. In Pic 1 in moves all the way around until it pops out of place, in other words the circular piece moves past the point where it is supposed to fit nicley to the lines of side plate(top of the side plate). If that makes any sense.

Just to make sure, the spring must fit on the underside of the circular piece(the "hook" side of the spring)

sOUNDS LIKE THE LEVER is in the wrong place. Once the lever is in, the lever should prevent the spring from turning when the lever hits the reel body. Check your lever position in the picture 1.

The lever is definately sitting correctly. I looked a bit closer at it. My lever doesnt sit as nicely as yours in the picture. It doesnt "line up" as nicely. When I looked it lookes like the plastic on the point is a little bit indented, so it catches, but there is not enough of it to stop itself, and coupled with the tension of the spring it forces it to overshoot. Does that make sense?

Got it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It somehow just worked. Lesson Learned. Dont take the clutch off! The Gold plate can slip back under the clutch lever. :win:
