Perfection Loop
« on: May 14, 2011, 09:23:39 AM »
I have used this knot fairly extensively in fly fishing to make a loop-to-loop connection and also for attaching flies. I was curious to know what you all think about using this in place of the rapala knot for attaching lures / rappies etc?

I dont know its strength as I havent tested it but it has never failed me.

Looks very similar to the Rapala knot... just finishes off differently, no reason why it shouldn't work just as well. I always hate doing the Rapala knot, it's just so ugly!

I also don't like the Rapala knot... it's bulky, ugly and not in line with the leader...

Did a bit of research and it seems this is the perfect substitute... some sites claim almost 100% strength which is similar or higher than the rapala knot (95%)!?!

This knot has never failed me in a loop to loop with light(fly) tackle. The line always breaks between my knots.
Added bonus is that the tag end comes away at an almost 90deg angle makes it perfect for fishing 2 flies and stops tangles.

Agree !

Any substitute to this that still allows free movement to a lure ?

I normally tie a "fisherman's" knot or a uni and don't pull it all the way down leaving a small loop I then pull like hell on the tag end to keep it in place. That way the lure has free movement the knot generally stays that way but if a big gogga comes along the knot can only slip a little and then lock in place.

My late dad taught me the bowline, used to make a loop in rope, that never slips.
Has anyone here tried it in mono as it is very simple to do ?
I don't however know its strength
Regards Paddy

As a sailor, I've always loved the bowline. A while ago I came across the "canoe knot" for jig heads and lures and when I looked closely, it was a bowline given a different name. I then tried it with some destructive testing and was very disappointed at the strength of it. I reckon it was somewhere down close to the 50% mark.

It was back to the rapala knot for me, but now I'll give the perfection a try. Thanks Dave.
Forgive me Father for I have spinned... It's been three weeks since my last cob session.

Guys according to some knot books I have the Rapala knot doesn't even come close to 95%. Besides that I don't think it gives lures better freedom of movement because the line clamps down on the lure eye with tension versus a quiqk clip or split ring which retains full movement under tension. I use the Boones 40lb quick clips on most of my spinning applications it is only about 6mm long and made of thicker wire than the rest I came accross. Between yft, natal snoek ,shad, bonnies and tigers it has never failed me to date. I can also use any knot I like to tie it onto my leader without worries (I prefer fig 8) and also have the added benefit of changing lures quickly without having to tie another knot.
Early birds catches the most worms. Early worms catches the most fish.
