Sliding trace and knots used
« on: May 11, 2011, 06:05:44 AM »
Had some reqeusts from users on  :ult:  to help with making slide traces, or at least show them how. I have managed to take some pics while making a trace to explain how I make my traces and the knots I use to secure my hooks and non-return clip.

You will start of by needing the following;

A pair of pliers
Length of wire witch will depand on the length you want to make you trace.
Two hooks of your choice
A non-return clip
And a skirt if desired

You will start of by pushing the wire thru the back of the hooks eye. Giving yourself a tag end long enough to work with.

Use you pliers to hold your hook and wire together with the sharp end facing up towards you. You must be sure that the wire will not move around when you start to secure the hook, utherwise the finished product will not be made neatley.

You need to wind the tag end you had around the shank of the hook two or three times.

Now take the tag end and push it thru the eye of the hook but from the side that the rest of you trace wire is comming from. Pull this nice and tite to secure it. Now follow thru with binding the tag end around the remainder of the wire.

This way of securing the first hook will make sure that it stays in a straight line

With the second hook you need to push the wire thru the back of the eye. Now I will always tie the second hook facing away from the first one. As you can see in the photo.

Now bend the wire at a 90 degree angle downward towards the sharp end.

Now you start the modified snell that Reefman had shown us by winding the wire back on to the shank of the wire. The first wind you do you must not bind up to hard because after about three winds around the shank you need to ga back to the hooks eye and pas the tag end that you now have back thru underneath the first turn that you made around the shank

Now pull all the exces wire thru underneath and secure it tightly. Once you had pulled all the wire thru and tightend it, now only push it thru the hooks eye and pull tight.

At this stage you can slide your skirt on if you wish to fish with one.

Now securing the non-return you oas some wire thru the swivel and once again hold tightleu with your pliers. Go around the neck of the swivel once and back thru the eye where the rest of the wire is comming from. Secure this by holding you tag end down with your pliers and pulling tight.

Now you can bind your tag end around the rest of the wireclip it of and neaten up with pliers and you NON-RETURN slide is done.

Interesting method of tying the bottom hook! I've seen it somewhere before, not sure where!

If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles

You will start of by needing the following;

A pair of pliers
Length of wire witch will depand on the length you want to make you trace.
Two hooks of your choice
A non-return clip
And a skirt if desired
 .

What wire would you use Carbon coated or Nylon coated and is it worth paying the little extra for the AFM Red coated wire ???

I prever using the carbon one. Have maid slides with the nylon and they work just as good.  just went thru some traces that got damaged and I felt that it was the nylon coated wire that was not as strong, but I might be whrong. The red one you are talking about I only use in 60bl for throw baits, or I prever using the camo one.
