Hi PH, the nearest thing I have seen to what you describe is the Halco Twisty, where they have taken a straight oblique spoon and put in a severe bend right at both ends. I am trying to picture what you are proposing, do you mean something like a Rapala lip? I don't think that a lip will really give the spoon much action, as the spoon is too heavy. Even sinking Rapalas don't have as much action as the floating variety, due to their weight killing the action. The only way, to my knowledge, of getting a straight spoon that casts well to flutter nicely on a slow retrieve is to give it an uneven weight, eg making one side concave and the other convex. There have been some very good spoons made over the years with this design, and they have been very successful.

Tommo thanks for the writeup it will help me a lot when I will be going to Rocky Bay again. Where is this place you are talking about in relation to Rocky Bay. I always catch from the rocks at the end of the caravanpark or the rocks where it turns around the park from the entrance. I will appreciate if you can give me this info.

Willie,

If you fish Rocky Bay you will know that you do not need to drive anywhere else to get some increadible fish. Over the past few weeks I have seen some nice fish landed there (all on spoon) and have been busted a few times and seen other anglers busted by some monster Kingies.

However, it does fish best on a SW wind and I think Umdoni and some others might fish better on a NE

Umdoni point is between Pennington and Sezela. You need to drive through Pennington town to get there. You can either park at the Umdoni golf club and walk down to the beach, then turn left to get to the point, or park on the open ground below the Roseveare's house and walk to the right along the railway line. Either way it is best to visit it during the day first to get the layout before trying the early morning dark arrival.

To be honest I wouldn't fish alone at night here. There are always a group of regulars on the rocks in the dark at Umdoni point in the early morning, so I have never heard of any issues there. Just don't leave your car unnattended near the railway line or the windows will more often than not get broken....

Yes it is a great place to fish and safe to fish at night as well, that is if you do it in front of the caravan park they have even got lights on in the evenings.
Tommo I will try and visit Umdoni point on my next visit was not sure if if was close to Rocky Bay.

Tommo, thank you for all the advice and tips in this thread.

Ive been dabbling with spoons of late too and find that I rather enjoy it. Ive only caught shad though.

Know Im off to St Lucia for 9 days and very keen to try spooning at off the beach and at Cape Vidal, do you perhaps have a few tips for fishing these to spots? it would be much appreciated.

Latest info can always be gleaned off oom Piet, (white toyota doing beach control).
He is always in the know.
